Drinking normal amounts of milk but seems miserable when awake (not much yet).

As your baby is still in its early days it’s best to contact your GP, call 111 or if you’re really concerned take them to A&E. Keep on monitoring your baby and note down all the symptoms. It could be hayfever or could be something else - just stay calm and focused. What other symptoms does your baby have? How are they sleeping, wet/dirty nappies, vomit, any mucus being coughed up/wheezy noise, breathing problems, etc?

I deffo wouldn’t hesitate to call someone.
How are they breathing? Can you see ribs when they breath in?

That's young for a barking cough. If it's croup (which seems to be going round with relaxing of covid rules) then they are likely to get worse as the night progresses. I'd be tempted to call 111, as they could organise an out of hours GP appointment. If you get more worried at any point, then A&E.

Thanks everyone, he is sleeping fine and taking 4oz per feed every 3-4h which is amazing as we had feeding issues, so passing lots of urine and stool. There is no mucus in the nappy but I can hear the phlegm when he's is coughing, I haven't seen him being any up but could be that he brings it up but swallows it, similar to his silent reflux. He's slept even more than usual today I would say but was really happy and alert at around 5pm, I believe I got a smile. I tend to overanalyse, so asked my husband about the wheezing as our older son had it before and he said straight away: no definitely no wheeze and the breathing is ok, it can be a bit more rapid or he's gasping for air a little when having coughed several times but no I cannot see the ribs, it's not that bad yet but I'm worried it'll get worse. I am closely monitoring him.

I called 111 and they will get someone to call us back (I called at around 8 after having seen your suggestions).

That’s good that baby is doing well. Keep monitoring his progress and you said you can hear mucus and is really tired so just let 111 know everything. He’ll be fine.

Is his chest working hard when he is breathing?

Do you know how to look for this? If their tummy is sucking in when they breathe I’d go to A&E. Or if the neck looks ‘strained’.

No doctor minds seeing a small baby. If you're concerned, take them to a doctor.

Hope he's better soon Flowers

I took my newborn to the drs recently for a cough and cold and they told me I had to take him for a covid test. Just to prepare you.

gemloving · 16/06/2021 07:40

Thanks everyone, he does seem fine. No coughing in the night - maybe 1-3 coughs. I'm an anxious mum even though this is my second. Someone called me at 01:30am which must have been the 111 doctor but I was asleep - interesting time to call!

I wouldn't be happy with a cough in such a young baby. No doctor minds checking over a baby.

Ring your GP this morning, they get babies in that young straight away, it's worth a check over just Incase
