Best medicine for toddlers hay fever?

Josie0900 · 13/06/2021 20:11

My 17 month old has terrible hay fever at the moment and she’s been waking every hour rubbing her eyes, coughing and not able to use her dummy because of congestion. I tried piriton syrup and it took me 3 hours to get her to sleep (this never happens!) I googled and it can cause hyperactivity in some children.

Is there anything else or anything herbal?

Might have to consult a GP as I don't know if others are suitable for that age group

Speak to the GP or pharmacist.

We tried local honey on his porridge every morning, which seemed to ease symptoms this year, until we went on holiday Smile

We have antihistamines from the GP when it's bad though as he goes downhill quite quickly.

My 20 month old takes liquid piriton from the pharmacy, I spoke to the pharmacist for this

OP has tried piriton and it caused hyperactivity

I’ve got the boots own brand allergy relief (orange bottle), which seems to be doing the job. Although DD says she doesn’t like the taste, but I suspect that’s because it is sugar free!

I'm pretty sure my two had cetirizine from toddlerhood. Always got on with it.

Phenergan might be worth trying. I think you can have that from 2yrs.

There are so many. A GP or pharmacist should help you find one that suits.

My two are 23 and 13 and both really struggling at the mo. Hay fever sucks.

dementedpixie · 13/06/2021 20:40

Cetirizine is for age 2+ which means you'd probably need it prescribed to give it under that age

I have an 18m old. We didn't get on with the liquid piriton but the GP prescribed generic chlorphenamine and it's been much better. It's the same active ingredient as piriton but has different other ingredients (and is sugar free). It also tastes far better so it's no longer a battle!

You can get this prescribed I have it for my 16 month old as piriton makes him drowsy so not the best for day time when it's worse. It's not licensed for under 2s but there is a dosage so it's a discussion with your dr if you are happy to accept it. 😊

Great thanks I’ll call GP tomorrow and see if I can get certirizine. She’s a ginormous 95th centile 17 month old so probably bigger than a lot of 2 year olds if it’s by weight at least ...
