Very heavy periods

Can you help me determine if this is normal for my daughter who is 13. Her periods started about 9 months ago and are still very irregular, I understand it's normal and they can take a while to settle. They show no sign of settling yet, she's just gone 3 months without a period. They are so heavy, she bleeds through even the thicker night time pads within an hour or two. She just sat on the sofa briefly and bled all over it, ruined her bedding last night, despite getting up in the night. She's in agony and taking pain killers, plus she's vomiting. She's quite shy and has said she doesn't want to see the GP, I think she should. Is this normal in the early months? Thank you.

Absolutely I would get her to see the GP and ask her to do her bloods to check for clotting agents?
How is she with bruises and cuts and grazes out of interest

OP, I'd get your daughter to the GP to be checked out. I started mine when I was 9 but they sorted themselves out pretty quick and I don't think I leaked a thick pad over just 2 hours

girlmama32 · 13/06/2021 20:53

Definitely get her to the gp, it isn't normal to be soaking through a night time pad in that amount of time or vomiting (assuming from the pain), poor thing.
Has she tried period pants? I've had heavy periods since having my DD and wear them with a pad, although you can wear them on their own, and they catch any leaks they are great

I used to easily soak through a night time pad or super plus tampon in a couple of hours. But I didn't have pain other than the odd mild twinge and definitely not vomiting. The GP prescribed tranexamic acid which was a miracle worker for me. DD also suffers from quite heavy periods and finds Modibodi period pants really good.

I think your DD should see the doctor just to make sure that there is not something else going on. This sounds quite extreme.

Thank you all for your replies. GP it is then. She's never bled heavily from a cut or anything, doesn't tend to bruise easily either. I think the vomiting is from the pain. Great suggestion about period pants, I'm off to do some research now. Thanks again.

Ring the GP and ask to see a female one.

Dd loves modibodi. She only started her period a few months ago but they're a game changer

I think she needs a GP

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/06/2021 09:52

Good news that she has never issues bleeding - my husband has a bleeding disorder and in the rare occasions it appears in females it normally appears during menstruation.
Would get her levels checked

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/06/2021 09:56

I used to vomit from pain.

My dd has tranxanamic acid to deal with really heavy periods on prescription.

RedMarauder · 14/06/2021 09:58

Please get your daughter to a GP asap.

She risks becoming anaemic for starters.

LindaEllen · 14/06/2021 10:13

Absolutely take her to the GP, it's not normal to bleed so much, even when periods first start.

In the meantime, think about the best possible protection you could get for her. Mooncups and the like often hold much more than a pad/tampon - so one of those, coupled with some quality period pants could be a really good solution.

I went on the pill a few years back and it made my periods much lighter (and they never returned to their previous heaviness when I came off it, been off it more than a year now) so that could be something the doctor suggests.

She needs to see a gynaecologist - someone who is a specialist.
Please ask them to check her for endometriosis. An ultrasound would be advised.

mamakoukla · 29/06/2021 03:42

Please do follow up on this. My periods were irregular, heavy, and so painful I’d often pass out. I was also anaemic which didn’t help. Don’t be fobbed off. Hope this can be helped soon
