Newborn hasn't poo'd in 48 hours

My 9 day old DD hasn't done a poo since Thursday night. Before that, her last bowel movement was Tuesday night.

We only came out of hospital on Tuesday due to feeding issues. We're moving over to formula but she has gained weight over the last few days.

I have been given information that says she should be opening her bowels at least 3-4 times a day so this is a big worry for me. Midwife saw her on Thursday and knew it had been a while since the last dirty nappy. We're due another visit on Monday.

DD otherwise seems fine. She's feeding well on expressed milk, sleeping lots but is having more content, wakeful times too. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort or distress. Plenty of wind too.

Should I be contacting the midwife or wait to see how she goes before Monday?

I would contact midwife.

At 9 days old contact the midwife for any concerns you have. Much much better to be safe than sorry.

Breastfed babies can go up to 10 days without poo'ing

anotherwinkywinkybumbum · 12/06/2021 19:07

Is she combi feeding at mo or just breast before you move to formula? It's very common for babies to not poo regularly if they are BF. My DD would go every 8 days and then have a massive blow out. MW not concerned at all.

I'd contact the midwife because you're concerned. If your dd is fine in herself, alert and not lethargic she's probably fine.

All 3 of my ebf children went from daily pooers to fortnightly but it was a gradual change. Yours might be an infrequent pooer but as you are worried and have had weight gain issues you should get her checked.

My two breastfed babies poo’d once every 10 days or less.
Phone your midwife you’re concerned though 😊

Breastfed babies should definitely be pooing more frequently in the first 6 weeks - after that they can be very infrequent but before it can be a sign of an issue. Definitely contact the midwife, that's what they're there for breastfeeding.support/breastfed-baby-poop/

It's also a red flag to me for a breastfed baby who has had feeding issues not to be pooing

Pemberleys · 12/06/2021 19:37

Contact the midwife to check and hopefully put your mid at rest. Though my breastfed DC could easily go 8-10 days.

Breastfed babies do go days without pooing. But not at 9 days old. And not after feeding difficulties.

Call your midwife, or health visitor if you've been discharged by the midwife. Better safe than sorry.

She's on donor breast milk at the moment, and occasional small amounts of my milk but my supply is just not there. She's feeding well and regularly - I was having to wake her for 3 hourly feeds but she's starting to stir now at around that mark.

She'll take a full amount, and if she's still looking for more then I'll top her up.

She seems absolutely fine except for the pooing. She's on my lap farting away as I type!
