Antibiotics drama

My two year old was prescribed penicillin for bacterial tonsillitis on Monday and we were told to give it four times a day until it was finished. Problem is that it tastes like shit and she's consistently spat it back out.

We've tried various methods to get her to drink it (in juice works best) but ultimately we've totally lost track of how much she's had.

I called the doc yesterday who told us to work out if she'd had 20 doses. I've absolutely no idea how to do this.

How much of an issue is this that you we don't know and that she won't have had the 20 doses?

No idea....is she actually getting better though?

SpamIAm · 12/06/2021 11:21

How much is gone from the bottle? Should be able to roughly work it out that way, unless she hasn't been drinking much of the juice.

Might not cause her any particular issues (although she could get ill again if she hasn't been fully treated) but not finishing the course is also a big contributor to antibiotic resistance.

magicflange · 12/06/2021 11:32

Yes she is better now. Thing I'm most worried about is the antibiotics resistance I guess. It's hard to tell as she's spat out what's in her syringe or glass down her front so we've no idea how much has gone done despite what's in the bottle.

glad she's better now. ..my DD was on antibiotics for a few years when she was little due to a urinary issue. ...They used to flavour the dose. .banana I think ..she quite liked it

Bagelsandbrie · 12/06/2021 12:01

If she’s better now I really wouldn’t worry about it. That’s the main thing. The odd course of antibiotics for childhood infections is nothing to worry about and if they need them they need them!

I take daily long term antibiotics for kidney issues.

SpamIAm · 12/06/2021 12:24

There's no way of knowing then is there 🤷‍♀️ as long as she's better, just keep an eye on case she gets worse again :)

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/06/2021 12:48

Don't worry if she is better. If ever she needs it again you have to give it in tiny amounts to the back of the cheek and keep their mouths closed until they have swallowed each little bit. It's quite an ordeal but needs must.

magicflange · 12/06/2021 13:06

@yikesanotherbooboo tried this and it didn't work. She just wriggles and thrashes around. I think if when she needs them again I'll insist they are flavoured @sometimescharlottesometimesnot

Actually I used to use one of those syringes you get with certain liquid paracetamol. .you could try that next time....aim towards back of mouth

After a hospital dash yesterday and a penicillin allergic toddler I feel your pain. DS is currently on a second batch of erythromycin the first set he had a while ago wasn't flavoured this time the Dr told us to get a flavoured one - he still hates it with a passion no amount of bribery is winning. Seemingly it is also noticeable in everything 🤷🏻‍♀️ .

magicflange · 12/06/2021 13:25

@sometimescharlottesometimesnot yes we've tried that. We've had the biggest battles with it.

@magicflange hoping your daughter has improved a bit more today. We had some success yesterday which I thought may work for you - we gave DS a chocolate button just before his medicine and whilst he was still eating it popped the medicine in (syringe) he still grimaced but medicine stayed in and he had a drink afterwards so I think the chocolate helped but didn't totally get rid of the taste for him.
