UserName17 · 11/06/2021 17:38

Can I have some advice ASAP please? My 2 year old had a temp and yesterday it was up and down n the most it went to was 38.2 it did go down to 36.8 before bed I checked again in night back to 38 but today it's been about 37, I've taken her for a covid test today so waiting for results, she seems perfectly fine in herself but her temp has now gone to 39.2? If it gets any worse than this am going to ring 111 but has anyone had this before? Thankyou! V scared momma here :( anyone know why this could be ?

Yes my kids regularly get temps between 38-39 it’s usually a viral thing.

Do they have a rash anywhere? If so check it’s non blanching?

Does the temp come down with calpol?

BadgertheBodger · 11/06/2021 17:39

Is it coming down with paracetamol (Calpol)? If it goes up and won’t come down within 30 mins of taking paracetamol I’d probably ring 111 and possibly take her to A&E at 39 plus.

UserName17 · 11/06/2021 17:42

She literally seems fine so I'm unsure what's going on, i don't see any rashes on her, it does come down with calpol but feel like it goes back up once worn off she last had some this morning so I'm going to give her some now it's gone back up, and hope it comes back down again, Thankyou for replying

Keep her dosed for a day or 2 if it’s coming down with calpol

ShowOfHands · 11/06/2021 17:44

You don't need to give medicine for a fever alone. It's the body doing its job. Of course give meds if a child is ill or in pain but a fever alone is just the body fighting something. Look at the child, not the thermometer.

EgonSpengler2020 · 11/06/2021 17:46

Temperature over 39C in an otherwise well child over 6months of age is unremarkable and not of concern unless they are feverish for more than 5 days and then they should be seen by a health professional (GP).

NICE paediatric traffic lights are readily available online and it is worth any parent of a young child familiarising themselves with it.

Moonshine11 · 11/06/2021 17:48

Nurofen is great for temperatures.
Windows open to allow air in is good to cool them down.

TrashKitten10 · 11/06/2021 17:49

If she's otherwise happy and with no other symptoms I wouldn't be too concerned, it's likely just a virus doing the rounds. My 19month old DD was poorly last weekend and her temp was getting up to 39.5 before nurofen but it was all back to normal by the next afternoon. They recover from these things quickly. Keep an eye on her but unless her temp rockets I'd only call 111 if you're getting concerned about her general condition/behaviour or she develops additional symptoms.

UserName17 · 11/06/2021 17:49

Thanks everyone. I'm 21 and she's my first, I've checked her and all sorts no rashes, cold etc, she does seem "off" like tired etc but other than that she's ok, I just don't want it any higher due to the risk of her having a fit. When she came out of nursery yesterday they said she wasn't herself at all, hopefully she's ok soon! Thanks again

@ShowOfHands this is terrible advice

ShowOfHands · 11/06/2021 17:54

Fits aren't caused by a high temp but by a quick rise in temp so just make sure she isn't wrapped up, have air circulating (window open or a fan in the room), plenty of fluids and loose cotton clothing. Be led by how she seems in herself.

It's tough when they're young and something is up but you know her better than anybody and likely some tlc, rest, fluids and she'll be right as rain.

If it's terrible advice you might want to take it up with the joint ambulance liaison committee as it is in the clinical practice guidelines for paramedics...

Firs are caused by a quick spike in temp op, so just keep an eye and keep on top of her meds.
Is she drinking enough fluid? Plenty wet nappies?

@sylbunny official advice. See NICE below:

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng143/chapter/Recommendations#antipyretic-interventions

Do not give anti-pyretics (Calpol and Nurofen) with the sole aim of reducing fever.

Inthesameboatatmo · 11/06/2021 18:01

Alternate between calpol and nurofen .

Moonshine11 · 11/06/2021 18:03

NHS website, your fine op.
I had mine at a&e for being unwell and having a temp and they told me to carry on these two meds to bring his temp.

@sylbunny

I think you’ll find that @ShowOfHands has given the most rational and evidence based advice on the thread.

UserName17 · 11/06/2021 18:21

Oh! I didn't know fits was caused by sudden rise I thought it was if it got to a certain number, thanks everyone the medicine brung it down it's now 37.5 she's drinking loads yes and wet nappies. It will probably rise again but hope not thanks again for all the advice!

I’ve had this recently and panicked too! It levelled out a few days but he’s still slightly elevated.
Doctor said probably teething as he has a lot of teeth coming through but if it’s still slightly elevated to take him in Monday and they’ll check ears nose throat and urine so don’t be afraid to call them if you’re worried

How is he today? We are having the same, we were on the mend and down to below 38 but it’s shot back up again today. I still think it’s teething but if it’s not normal by bedtime I think I’ll ring 111

Hello! She's absolutely fine now, lasted 4 days and the last day she was sick, after that temp went down and she's now back to her usual diva self! Hope your little one is better soon!

My children get very high fevers (usually with fairly minor Viral infections) and I don't start worrying until about 39.8 (when I would check regularly, regular antipyretic such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, and get doctors advice, maybe take to out of hours or children's A&E if the antipyretic didn't help, although I'd usually try paracetamol and ibuprofen before A&E)
