Can heyfever/allergies cause a persistent cough?

My DD has had a reoccurring cough every few weeks for the majority of her life. In winter, they are always linked to colds & being snotty. But the cough goes on for 3/4 weeks after the cold, she gets a weeks break & then she’ll get another cold and off we go again! We’ve done about 50 covid tests this winter 🥴

In summer, I can’t link her cough to anything. She rarely gets colds. She doesn’t show any other allergy symptoms really. The occasional runny nose but nothing else. But she has a barking, dry cough for weeks at a time.

Her breathing is always OK, I have no concerns with it & as such, I’ve taken her to the docs about her cough really. A few times as a baby & young toddler but not recently as we have various methods to handle it & its ‘just a cough’.. but as she’s getting older, it’s noticeably making her look & feel exhausted after coughing all night. She is quite frequently sick from coughing now as well which is new, previously she had an impressive gag reflex 🙈

I have cough dominant asthma. I really wheeze or have attacks. I just cough & cough & cough. I can’t help think my DD is very similar but equally, I wondered if it could be heyfever/allergies? I also suffer from heyfever really badly, but I have obvious symptoms & it doesn’t cause a cough.. 🤔

Could it be a post nasal drip?

FelicityPike · 04/06/2021 21:26

Post nasal drip. Definitely.

Nocturnal cough can be a dominant asthma symptom in children. They don’t always have persistent wheeze with it.

Hay fever and asthma are strongly linked so it could be worth trying an antihistamine for her if you haven’t already. If no improvement in the cough then see the GP to discuss asthma.

Allergy asthma

My daughter has hayfever which triggers her asthma as a cough and it’s worse at night. She’s been particularly bad the last few days as it’s been so hot and muggy and the pollen count so high. Definitely worth another chat with a doctor.

Sounds like she may have asthma. Such a strong link if you have it too. I pretty sure my daughter has it to. We are seeing the GP on Thursday after antibiotics etc for a sore throat... Hasn't cleared the coughing up 6 weeks now.
