Morphine in pregnancy

Hey all.
I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant and have been on 200mg of morphine slow release tablets for 4 years. I hate that I am currently taking these with not much hope of coming off them I have chronic deliberating pain due to fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. My beautiful baby although wasn't planned is so very much wanted. I am beyond petrified of what effect this medication may have already done to my baby. My doctors are fully aware of the situation. I have read about ladies taking fentanyl and morphine whilst pregnant. But I'm worrying myself sick. I'm constantly researching on my phone with conflicting evidence. Can anyone reassure me in the slightest I'm not going to damage my baby. Anyone in the same boat, similar boat anything please comment. I am literally going out of my mind and I also suffer with extreme anxiety and depression 🙏

If your doctors are fully aware, then listen to what they say.

Most drugs are officially 'unknown' as to their risks in pregnancy because there's not been clinical trials (as that would be unethical) but in practice loads of examples have resulted in knowing very well what the risks are (if any).

Only listen to your consultants on the subject. FWIW I have similar conditions and took 60mg codeine 4x daily for most of two pregnancies - I had access to the pharma databases at the time which basically concluded 'dont take loads of heroin, cocaine and other street drugs at the same time and should be fine" Same is likely to be true for morphine.

Thankyou shakeahettyfeather great name btw. As I said I'm going out of my mind to the point when I have to take my pills every morning I struggle to swallow with my fears. This pregnancy is far from ideal I am morbidly obese. Have the health conditions I mentioned and suffer depression and anxiety also. Although since finding out I'm pregnant I feel a little lighter in that aspect. It's almost like a miracle. We had big problems conceiving our daughter, 3 long hard years of trying. Then with this one, we have done the deed 3 maybe 4 times since Xmas and well when I got my first positive I nearly feinted. I was overcome with happiness, until reality set in and I started to think of all the complications. I have a specialist app tomorrow so will be interesting to see what they say. You have helped put my mind at rest a little let's hope they have a plan to put in place . Thankyou 🙏

Hey! Slightly different situation but I was in an accident when 16 weeks pregnant and was in hospital for 4 months (many surgeries under general, many many blood transfusions). I was on morphine (and lots of it!) the entire time and I now have a beautiful nearly 4 year old sat next to me with no issues. I have been on various opiates ever since as a result of the accident and have gone on to have another beautiful little girl with no problems. Obviously I am only one person and not medical, but I was repeatedly told that it would be worse for the pregnancy for my body to be under the pressure of huge amounts of pain than to keep taking the pain relief. As long as all medical professionals are aware of the situation, all you can do is your best!! X

Thankyou so much littlehouseinthebigcity. I'm so sorry u had a your accident. But your input has really helped put my mind at rest. I've been feeling like I'm the only person to have to take such a high dose whilst pregnant. I hope you are ok now. And thankyou for your helpful words xx
