Very prominent veins on 8.5 month old’s forehead.

Hi there,

Could anyone tell me if this is normal?

I wouldn’t be concerned about the sugar bug, if it were only the sugar bug but the prominence of my baby’s forehead veins are really niggling at me.

They’re more obvious in certain lights and the attached photo only kind of portrays their prominence.

I’ve asked paediatricians and my GP - none of whom are concerned.

But I don’t know. I hope it’s just anxiety on my behalf.

She is somewhat pale but not overly. Her head circumference has always been fine - around the 91st but her length is 99th, so she’s proportional.

Any insights? Normal? Right to be concerned?

I’ve booked another GP appointment for Wednesday.

Respectfully, I think if several GPs and pediatricians are not concerned… then you should try to not be concerned!

My kids are also pale babies whose veins were quite visible. We often got comments from strangers. They’ve faded with time though. I think baby skin is thin, and less pigmented. It can be an eye sore, but I think that’s it!

She's just fair OP. She's got lovely eyes.

Fromneverland · 28/05/2021 20:27

It’s because she is pale skinned
Very common , totally normal, and you’ve thought too much into it and now can’t unsee it

Mylittlesandwich · 28/05/2021 20:29

I also have a very fair skinned DC. He's as pale as me. He also has visible veins. I initially actually thought one of them was a bruise because of where it is but it's not a problem. He's 18 months now and they're still visible. Your little one is fair as well so it'll just be the same thing.

Beamur · 28/05/2021 20:32

Such beautiful eyes!
The veins will be less noticeable as she grows.

Duploisthebest · 28/05/2021 20:34

My son also has very obvious veins because he is fair. I'm not worried and your daughter looks the same.

AraicC · 28/05/2021 20:58

Thanks to all of you who replied, all your replies are massively reassuring!

Totally normal. My daughter is fair (9m) and has similar marks. Their skin is just very thin at this age.

cocoloco987 · 29/05/2021 08:29

Pale and delicate baby skin - totally normal but I'm surprised you'd believe strangers on mumsnet over paeds and dr's. What's a sugar bug?

DinosaurDiana · 29/05/2021 08:30

I always found with my kids that these veins got more noticeable when they’re tired.

Checkingout811 · 29/05/2021 08:32

What’s a sugar bug? It doesn’t look right to me but if several doctors have said it’s fine then I’m sure it is.

DinosaurDiana · 29/05/2021 08:34

Apparently it’s a vein between the eyebrows.
Some people think it’s a sign of ADHD. One of mine had the vein but doesn’t have ADHD. The vein got less visible as she grew.

cocoloco987 · 29/05/2021 08:36

Ah my brother still has that vein and he's mid 40's. He definitely doesn't have ADHD

ShowMeHow · 29/05/2021 08:37

DS was the same he’s ten now and you would only notice if he is very pale and poorly if at all.

By age 4-5 they had faded/skin had more pigment what ever.

By 6 he had worked out that aiming the thermometer at this point in his forehead he can usually score a slightly higher temperature and try to blag a day off school 😂

Restlessinthenorth · 29/05/2021 08:51

My daughter had a huge protruding blue vein under her eyebrow from birth. As a child people who didn't know her always presumed it was bruise/she has had an accident. She's 10 now and this thread has made me realise it is no longer visible at all.

Bumzoo · 29/05/2021 09:44

Most pale kids have noticeable veins but as they get older they are less obvious.

AraicC · 29/05/2021 10:26

The sugar bug is the prominent dorsal nasal vein between her eyebrows. Links to ADHD/Autism are not evidenced based, more internet ‘woo’/pseudoscience.

I’ve experience of medical professionals getting it wrong, so I don’t take their word as bible. They’re human.
Knowing that there’s many parents out there with babies that have prominent facial veins too gives me greater comfort. But I would always seek medical advice.
