Low body temperature at night

My son (9 months old) has a viral infection (day 6 today). Temperature is completely gone now and these is a residue of rash which is vanishing too. However once the fever subsided we started to notice that his temperature at night is dangerously low. At one point we measured 34.9F. The room is 22-23C and he is wearing a vest and full sleeves might grow and 1tog sleeping bag. We called 111 and they asked all relevant questions and thankfully everything else was fine except the very low temperature and him being cold to touch on hands, neck and cheeks. They even asked to wake him up to see if he is alert which he was. They didn't think it was an issue and asked me to warm him up and if the temperature goes below 35 again then call them again. I spent all night trying to warm him up but I could barely get it to 35.7 - 35.8. The next morning he temperature was normal but he was weak due to the viral. Second night same thing happened and his body temperature dropped to 35.2. Again spent whole night warming him up and during the day he was fine. Now it's the third night and his temperature is dropping. He had been sleeping for 3 hours and his temperature is 35.5 right now.
I am not sure why his temperature is dropping. How to keep his temperature normal during night and how low is too low to worry.
Anything anyone can share would be very helpful. Thanks.

I know this is an obvious question. But have you tried another thermometer just to make sure?

BlackInk · 26/05/2021 10:10

Have you been giving him paracetamol/ibuprofen before bed OP? That could lower his temperature a bit. Body temp does lower during sleep naturally, and is higher when awake. What kind of thermometer are you using and where are you taking his temp? Have you tried taking your own temp at the same time to compare, or using a different thermometer? He may always be cool at night but you wouldn't normally notice... If you do feel you need to warm him up, the best thing is skin to skin. Strip him to nappy/pants and snuggle up together in bed for a few nights. Maybe a warm drink of milk?

We are using ear thermometer and yes we checked it in ourselves and the reading is fine on us so the thermometer seems ok.

We were giving him paracetamol and ibuprofen during fever but once the fever was gone we stopped giving him these meds and the lower body temperature has been only once his fever was gone.

I don't have any advice sorry, but my DS was like that when he was little. He used to sweat from his head and his temperature was around 35.5ish!

When I said to the health visitor she told me nothing to worry about and her son's lips used to turn blue whilst he slept!!

I'd try the GP to set your mind at ease, but I think a lot of kids have a lower temperature at night. I eventually threw away the thermometer as was getting obsessed with taking readings 😳😳

I know our bodies do naturally cool down for sleep. Personally I'd wait until he was well and do a few temp checks just to compare. If he's alert and well in himself as much as they can be with a virus, drinking enough, then it might just simply be the way he is.

Hi ,any idea why it happened I am going through same with my 19 month old

SSB303 · 01/03/2026 18:34

@Jazz88 It was such a long time ago. I don’t remember all the details but thankfully everything was ok. With a baby/ toddler the temperature does drop at night. Add infection to that and the meds they take, the temperature goes further down. But as long as there are no other symptoms then it should be ok. Hope your little one gets well soon.
