Temperature in children when to be worried?

So I'm just after some guidance and reassurance on children's temperatures....
DS 4 woke this morning with a cough, and feeling under the weather and we are awaiting results of a PCR test.
His temp is currently 39.8 in one ear and 38.4 in the other.
I'm freaking out as I've always had a real anxiety thing about fevers in kids.
It's a normal reaction right? To fight infection or virus, but when should I be worried?
A certain temperature or for a number of days?
And what should I do to bring the temp down apart from Calpol which I've just given?
Thank you I'm so anxious right now 😢

Calpol/Ibroprofen to bring the temperature down.

Really don't get too worried about temperatures. One of mine used to hit over 41 and still be running round playing. Look at the behaviour not the temperature, unless the temperature shows no signs of breaking.

If they're floppy, confused, reacting to light, not really waking up that's more worrying.

If it comes down with calpol, keep up the doses and monitor. If it doesn't, call 111 for advice (though you could do that anyway tbf). As long as he's OK in himself, i wouldn't be too alarmed.

There’s some good advice here...

No doctor would be unhappy with a worried parent calling for advice though. You could try your GP out of hours or 111.

The fact it's much higher in one ear might indicate an ear infection, has he complained of a sore ear? Doesn't necessarily mean he needs antibiotics as might could be viral but I'd be on the lookout for ear related symptoms!

I'd alternate calpol and nurofen every 3 hours (make sure you keep within the max daily doses of both) and keep an eye on him. I have a fairly low bar for getting my DC checked out to be honest, if I'm worried then I think it's worth getting them checked.
