15m old with high temp & snotty nose. FTM & worrying.

My 15 month old has had a really snotty nose for 3/4 days.
Yesterday started with a temp of 38.4 and last night it jumped to 39.6

I’ve called the Drs this morning and we’ve been told to get a Covid test to rule that out.

I’ve been giving calpol and on advice of the Dr have given some nurofen.

The Dr didn’t offer us an appointment (guessing this is due to the fact it could be Covid, although very unlikely)

I’ve been wondering about a sore throat but I’ve had a look and can’t see anything.

It’s the first temp DC has had apart from after vaccinations.

Guessing it’s a bug or something from nursery (been there 9 weeks)

I didn’t think colds presented with a fever?

What else could this be? I’m such a worrier. 😞

My son has had a fair few if these when you get than 15 months. They pick bugs up all the time.

Is his temperature responding to the calpol?
Could be an ear infection, it could just be a cold or virus.

Lou573 · 18/05/2021 10:43

They pick these things up constantly OP in their first year of nursery. You know it’s a bug - it’s more worrying if there’s a temperature without an obvious cause.

JaffaRaf · 18/05/2021 10:46

Try not to worry it’s totally normal for kids to get fevers, you are doing all the right things already so just keep an eye on them. With mine at that age it was quite often an ear infection, didn’t cause any major problems though. I’d book the covid test sooner rather than later so that you don’t have to isolate for longer than necessary if it’s negative.

@Horehound

Yeah it’s responding to calpol. It dropped from 39.5 to 37.7 and then this morning it was back down to normal.

We have been for it this morning. 🙂

Ok that's a good sign then. Just keep on with the calpol and nurofen if required. I know it's horrible but these things do just happen every now and then. Just make sure you give lots of fluids if your baby has gone off food/sleeping more

@Horehound

The fluids thing worries me too Confused

He doesn’t drink a lot of water but he does still breastfeeding and he’s fed a lot, he’s had normal amount of wet nappies too.

My LO has been loaded with cold too!
Plenty calpol, I’ve been using vicks aswell.
If he does have a sore throat the calpol should help, keep an eye out for bad breath which would most likely result in tonsillitis.

Along as temp controlled he’ll be ok. Plenty cuddles!

Moonshine11 · 18/05/2021 11:03

Regarding fluids, my LO only has water and when he’s not well and not drinking enough I let him have juice so he gets it down.

Babyboomtastic · 18/05/2021 11:05

It sounds just like a regular bug. He probably hasn't had one before because of the lab of socialisation with Covid and everyone taking extra precautions. You can expect him to get 5-10+ of these a year in the first couple of years, some will have temperatures, some won't. If it's been going on for several days, he seems particularly distressed/pulling his ear etc, odd symptoms or isn't drinking anything, then get advice, but otherwise, it's just the same as a cold we get - it's just that we have immunity to a lot of them and he doesn't yet. Very frequent bugs are very common in the first few months of nursery.

Totally agree with this! When my DD was 8 months old she had a high temperature with no other obvious signs of illness. Three different Dr's told me it was a virus. In the end I took her to A&E and her infection rates were off the chart, she had Sepsis (after ruling out Meningitis with a lumbar puncture)

A temperature still sets my anxiety levels sky high, but if they have a snotty nose or a cough I tend to worry less.

@Moonshine11

I’ve been wondering about offering juice.

He does have sips of water but really doesn’t drink a lot of it.
I thought juice might be more appealing to him.
He’s never had it before and I wasn’t sure at what age he should start having it. 🙈

@Heyduggee123

Oh gosh that sounds really frightening.

I must admit I felt really panicked when I saw 39.6 on the thermometer last night.

He does have a very snotty nose which started before the temp.

Yeh we give very weak diluting juice. :)

Heyduggee123 · 18/05/2021 11:14

When they're bad like that I tend to alternate Calpol & Nurofen. I have Twins and they're always worse with their temperatures at night. I think as long as he's showing other symptoms of a virus he'll be absolutely fine. Nursery is an absolute hive of germs, it sometimes feels like they constantly have something.

Lots of fluids, lots of cuddles

xx

Sorry @Horehound I quoted your comment by mistake Confused

my comment should have been for @lifeisbutadreamer xx

Moonshine11 · 18/05/2021 11:17

He can have it now just obviously weak!
It’s the only way I can get fluid in him when he’s not well!

lifeisbutadreamer · 18/05/2021 11:18

@Heyduggee123

I didn’t realise we could mix the calpol and nurfoen until the Dr told me. 🙈

I think because we’ve been in lockdown most of his little life we haven’t really thought much about bugs and we were fortunate with his vaccines that he only needed a few doses of calpol.
I feel a bit clueless.

I guess now he’s at nursery we have a lot more
of this to come.

OP posts:
Horehound · 18/05/2021 12:12

Yes you alternate them but you can only give nurofen once every 8 hours so just be mindful of that. Calpol is bit hard on the liver but ibuprofen will be (but it's fine just only give for as long as required)

Horehound · 18/05/2021 12:14

@lifeisbutadreamer yeh my boy started nursery in August 2020 and I think he had a cold or bug every week pretty much. He got some respite over the Xmas hols at home with us then when they went back it was only key worker/essential worker children so was very reduced numbers and that helped him too.
So you will have 6m-1yr of constant bugs in afraid!

Seeline · 18/05/2021 12:16

As long as you breast feed whenever he wants, you don't need extra fluids. Formula is different.

NameChange30 · 18/05/2021 12:21

A breastfed baby/toddler does not need juice. Provided they're still breastfeeding (which he is) breastmilk will provide the hydration he needs. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Breastmilk provides antibodies too, it's amazing stuff!

As everyone else has said, colds and other viruses are very common after they start nursery. DC1 seemed to catch every bug going and often had a high fever (40+ a few times which freaked us out!) Keep an eye on symptoms and if in any doubt, call GP or 111, but as a general rule it's not usually anything to worry about.

You could try giving Sambucol for Kids, my friend swears by it for preventing/minimising bugs when starting nursery.

My little girl who is nearly 5 ALWAYS has a fever with a cold
