Hello. Does anyone have any experience of this please? Any advice / tips on how to make it easier to live with will be massively appreciated. Thank you

My daughter had this when she was about 11 onwards. She played rugby, judo and swam in a squad so some times the new bone growth under her knee was very pronounced.

She did a lot of upper leg exercises to stabilise her knee cap as that was part of her problem, used pain killers when needed and tried to stretch slowly and gently every day.

She has grown out of it, but part of that I think was when she stopped swimming competitively because the hours of training never allowed it to heal properly.

My dd was diagnosed with osgood Schlatters when she was 10. 18months of pain later we were told the diagnosis was wrong and she actually had chondromalacia patella - causes similar pain but is actually quite treatable which is good! She is now doing much better.

My son was diagnosed with it at age 9. The doctor explained it means growing pains! Happens when a child has a huge growth spurt.

QueenMabby · 15/05/2021 19:55

My ds had it at 11 - he was playing hockey every day. It lasted 9 months. Ibuprofen gel applied twice a day helped manage it. He had a massive growth spurt and it went away. He still has v knobbly knees though but no pain.

DD1 had it from about 13. She danced and was quite promising but It put paid to that entirely.

School were good. She didn’t do PE for years and cut back on dancing lessons. Had physio and orthotics for shoes which made it manageable but she was heartbroken about the ballet.

My hockey playing DS 14 yrs is suspected to have this too, will look at links. He had lots of painful knees (waking in night crying) when younger 8/9ish and wondering if that was it too

blackteaplease · 15/05/2021 20:04

I had this as a child and had to give up all sport including pe for several months to let it heal. I had been club swimming 3 nights a week and doing taekwondo 2 nights a week.

Poor lad, that's quite pronounced!

DD1 was diagnosed around age 9. She had quite a lot of physio to help stretch it out. Knee supports too as her knee kept giving way. She's now 17 and only has orthotics as over pronation made it worse.

Painkillers were available whenever she needed them too.

boristhebarstool · 16/05/2021 20:35

He has his first physio appointment for this Friday and awaiting an appointment for an X-ray to just double check nothing else is going on. Hopefully the physio will give him some helpful exercises to do then
