DS 7 low blood sugar symptoms in the morning

Hi, I am worried about my 7 year old ds. He has woken up a few mornings in the last month feeling shakey, crying and having no energy to the point he has shuffled downstairs because he feels so drained. After eating he starts to feel better but takes over an hour to feel completely recovered. Last night he had a decent sized healthy dinner and an ice lolly after. He has a decent diet. Probably the healthiest diet of all the kids I know. He has also been complaining of headaches recently. Does anyone know what this could be? I'm waiting a call back from the doctor but that might not be until Monday now. Thanks.

My ds who is now 18 has always had times when his blood sugar levels drop. We found a big glass of milk before bed very useful . Also. , a sweet drink like OJ whilst still in bed. Tends to happen in clusters then not for ages.

....whilst still in bed in the morning.....

What time is he having tea? Mine always had supper at this age as they just couldn't go from 5pm to 7am, so they had supper at 7pm too. At some points we let them have an early morning snack in their rooms before breakfast.

Whilst waiting for the doctor I would try the things that you would do if you knew this was just hunger symptoms.

I myself still get very shaky and wobbly if hungry, so I always have food with me.

Thanks for the reply. We normally eat between 5.30 and 7. Most of the time it's about 6. Breakfast is normally 7.30. I will try some milk before bed but I'd rather not get into the habit of supper unless I have to. He has a doctors appointment tomorrow so I will update then.

So ds has his doctors appointment today. They didn't really know what to say. They are going to get in touch with a pediatric doctor and see if there are any tests they should do.

Just another update. Ds woke me up at 4.30 this morning with low blood sugar symptoms again. I'm so worried about him.

Has he blood sugar actually been checked?

LambHamb · 11/05/2021 06:48

No it hasn't. I can't think of what else it would be though.

You could take it and see?

With my ds we were given a blood sugar monitor and measured every time he felt weird or became oddly upset/irrational. Once it got below about 4.2 his behaviour would change and he'd complain of feeling unwell. No diagnosis but it confirmed our suspicions. He's learnt to eat regularly and recognise when bs is getting a bit low. GP told me that hypoglycaemia episodes are recognised in some countries as a "condition" but not in the UK.

clipclop5 · 15/05/2021 03:07

Very similar happened to DD - thankfully it seemed to clear up after a few weeks but at the time it was definitely concerning. She would wake up in the mornings very shaky, tired, dizzy + nauseous but would go away after sugars went up with food/drink. We have had another few isolated incidents of it but these are few and far between so not a cause for worry.

Flossie44 · 17/05/2021 17:52

Can you purchase a glucose monitor and check them?

CheshireAxe · 28/05/2021 02:59

How did you get on op?

lonelymamof4 · 12/03/2023 02:04

Did you get anywhere with this, I'm having this issue with my son

Type 1 diabetic here. Not giving 'medical' advice, just an opinion. 1st of all, it's not that uncommon, in children, is he very slim? Going thorough a growth spurt? Plus many adults complain of the same, if they don't eat regularly. Worse case scenario pancreatic tumor? I have no idea what the solution is other than eating more. I don't know why the pancreas and body isn't regulating and using his fat supplies if necessary.

Check out Ketotic Hypoglycaemia - Rapid Starvation Response. Especially if DC has sweet/pear/ketone breath in the mornings.

Hmm. Op ds was not ill, didn't have a lack of food because of illness. It's happened quite a few mornings. In the meantime till GP actions something, maybe more carbs at every meal, and particularly something complex carbohydrate? Pre bed. (Rice and potatoes for example, but maybe not suitable for a young lad late night curry! Wink - maybe a banana sandwich and a glass of milk? ) pre bed.

Vanillazebra · 12/03/2023 05:22

Our pediatrician recommended a glass of milk with a spoon full of cornflour mixed in
