DS urine infection-waiting for peads app

Astronaut8 · 05/05/2021 20:01

DS has had a urine infection, he’s 2.

On antibiotic and is on trimethoprim until we see peads who may advise to be on longer.

Whilst I know this is routine and they like to check kidneys etc has anyone had this done for their LO before and could you tell me what happens please at the app?

Do the apps come through fairly quickly for this sort of thing?

Hey - slightly different situation as my DD was 3 but had recurrent infections so was referred. They referred her for a kidney scan first - ultrasound - to check her kidneys and also how well she emptied her bladder - we were told there and then that all was well but that a report would go to GP. GP was happy that there was nothing in the way of abnormalities and wanted just wanted to monitor incase of further infections basically. If the results were abnormal she would have been referred to paeds for review.
The scan took a little while - about 8 weeks I think - but that was because it was at the start of the summer after the first lockdown and there was a backlog - the sonography was really kind to DD and put her at ease and there was a senior diagnostic member of staff to analyse the results immediately and just confirm what would happen next. As I say, in our case it was just to say that there were no abnormalities and so she didn’t need to be referred on unless the GP was worried, but just hearing that was a great relief! X

Thank you for your reply!

All abit scary when you haven’t had to do something like this before!

Pleased to hear your DD was all good!

Yes, my son had urosepsis a few times from 4 months. They did various tests including a reflux test with a dye in the kidneys and all came back ok. Never found out why he got so unwell with them it was just ‘one of those things’

We had the app probably 2 months after his second UTI

FireUnderpants · 07/05/2021 17:29

DS has been waiting for a urology appointment to come since January. The hospital have the referral but can't book it yet.

Marcydarcy7867 · 07/05/2021 20:32

I wouldn’t worry too much. Surely they are only referring you a paed/consultant because he is young to get an infection and they just want to make sure. It could well be nothing.

Marcydarcy7867 · 07/05/2021 20:33

Urine infections are very common in older children

Astronaut8 · 07/05/2021 20:35

@tuxedocat thank you! Yeah my LO has been so ill with it! I never expected it to be a urine infection tbh!

@FireUnderpants thank you! Should have known with COVID it wouldn’t be as quick as maybe before!

@Marcydarcy7867 ah yeah I did say in op I know it’s routine. I was just wondering about wait times and what happened in the app.

It’ll depend on why you’ve been referred. If it’s just to check might be a quick one and no follow up. If they are worried/want to check for anything further they might do an ultrasound of kidneys, dye test or similar. They might also do a blood test to check kidney function.

Marcydarcy7867 · 07/05/2021 20:55

Wait times depends on your local nhs. If they are him on antibiotics till a paed checks him sounds like you’ll be seen soon.

Honestly, antibiotics treat urine infections fast and though scary they aren’t serious. The worry is underlying conditions that may have caused it. It’s just a concern at this stage and I would save worrying about until anything is diagnosed. You can rest assured anything major would likely have been picked up before now.

tuxedocat · 07/05/2021 20:56

@Astronaut8 we had an ultrasound whilst we were admitted and then we had the dye reflux test which was about 8-12 weeks later. Both showed no reason, the dye test was horrific i won’t lie and that was with a 6/8month old

It’s done fast approx 10-15 mins to flush the system but it’s not enjoyable. Good luck x

Marcydarcy7867 · 07/05/2021 20:57

*urine infections aren’t serious if treated btw. They can be very serious if they go untreated!
