Getting 5 year old to drink water

Blueeyes83 · 03/05/2021 18:59

Hi Everyone
My daughter has been advised by the hospital to drink 1.5 litres of fluids a day which I think is quite a task for a 5 year old! She’s not keen on water so I struggle to get water into her. I’ve tried fruit in her water but no luck as well as star charts etc. Has anyone tried Waterdrops for their children or have any other ideas on things I can try? Also do you think as she gets older she will get better with water? Thanks

What else does she drink? If she likes squash or fruit juice then can you give that very very diluted? Also make sure you're offering it at her preferred temperature, I recently realised that dd hates fridge cold water.

Ice lollies?

I LOVE water, I don't drink much other than water & cups of coffee a day (some alcohol occasionally) but I don't drink fizzy or juice etc.

Sometimes I like it really really cold & sometimes cool but not cold. It really makes a difference to how much I can drink.

Every now & then I just can't drink it, so I put a little Ribenna concentrate in it. And I mean a little, it only just makes the water slightly pink but it makes a difference to how much I can drink.

It sounds like getting the fluid into her is important at the moment, so maybe try a tiny bit of whatever flavour she prefers. Not the sugar free stuff though as it's really sweet & can start sugar cravings (even though it's not sugar).

I don't like actual fruit in my water either, but have you tried cucumber? It's popular in the low carb circles...and kids are strange about what they take to...especially if they think it's special & yours!!

Best of luck. Hope she's better soon x

Thanks for your replies. Up to now I get milk into her, as well as very diluted squashes. I’ve never given her fizzy drinks and don’t ever intend to. She will also have homemade smoothies and I’ve made homemade lemon cordial. I’ll try the cucumber in her water for school tomorrow and see how we get on.
I’m hoping it’s something she grows out of in the future as at the moment she is very fussy over a lot of food too! Thanks

Probably not helpful long term but with my kids when we get to the summer and it’s hotter I buy them cool new cups, or a jug or something and they drink loads more water because it’s fun helping themselves to the jug.

Blueeyes83 · 03/05/2021 20:03

That’s a good idea thanks, she’s started to make her own breakfast now which she loves so the jug could be a good way to get her to drink water x

My 4 year old loves ice cubes and would happily munch away on them. Could you offer those or turn them into slush to help get more liquid into your daughter?

If she needs fluids then anything watery helps too like cucumber, watermelon, milkshakes, hot chocolate
I drink water with sugar free squash, I use so little I don't worry about it. Sparkling water?

Ice cream and yoghurt also counts as fluid.
