Constant recurring bronchiolitis in 13 month old

Hi all!

My daughter had bronchiolitis over Christmas. Prior to this any illness she had was a standard cold with mainly a blocked and runny nose.

Since she had bronchiolitis at Christmas she has had it a further 5 times. It’s the exact same every time, runny nose first 12 hours, then really poorly with difficulty breathing with some coughing for the next 12, then starts to slowly get better with wheezing lasting about a week.

In between these bouts of illness she wheezes after she’s been running about.

Obviously I plan on going to the GP but I need to get enough video of her wheezing and being ill prior to this. But when I google bronchiolitis it doesn’t seem that it’s massively recurring and if it’s a virus where the blooming heck is she catching the same kind of virus and building up no immunity to it?

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Dd caught whooping cough at a fortnight old. Then bouts of bronchiolitis for a year... Was hideous and I feel for you.
They mentioned not knowing about long term damage from the WC but luckily none.
He is 20 this year and a very fit soldier - def no lasting effects.

Hi OP, my son got very ill with bronchiolitis when he was 9 months old. After that everytime he got whatever bug was going around, he got very ill, very high temperature and wheezing. This went on for a number years, but thankfully he did grow out of it the time he was about 8.

We had this - after a few stays in hospital we ended up under a peadatrics consultant who gave us an early diagnosis of asthma. We have a lot of asthma in our family so it was highly likely she would get it too. She's had a brown inhaler once a day since and it's been brilliant - no reoccurrence

Hi, sorry you're going through this.

We had similar with my son. He had bronchiolitis at 7 months, and then every few weeks would catch another virus and become very unwell, struggling to breathe and requiring admission for oxygen and nebulisers. We were told that he was suffering from "viral induced wheeze" and that he was likely to grow out of it, but it may develop into asthma.

He is now 7, he does have a diagnosis of asthma and is (touch wood) stable on preventative medication.

Definitely go to the GP, these problems are so common and hopefully they will give you the information and support you need. I sympathise, it is horrible to see your child struggling to breathe.

It is massively recurring. I usually warn parents that when they've had bronchiolitis once, they're very likely to do similar (though usually not quite so badly) every time they get a cold for months. Things usually improve over the summer, and the next winter be not as bad. But still prudent to get checked out by the GP. Especially as they're getting into the older age range for bronchiolitis, so may actually now be recurrent viral induced wheeze, which during an episode tends to respond well to an inhaler.

Unfortunately it can be recurring. DD had it at 5 weeks old and was in hospital for quite a while. The doctors said she would likely suffer from it again. She then had recurring bronchiolitis until she was about 18 months and was regularly in hospital using nebulisers. Every time she caught a cold it would develop further and she developed pneumonia at 1 Yr old. She had sleep apnea, she had her tonsils and adenoids out just before she was 2 and this massively helped with her respiratory infections. She is now diagnosed as asthmatic but is improving each year she gets older.

Thanks very much everyone it’s reassuring to hear that it definitely is recurring. It definitely seems like every time she gets a cold it turns into bronchiolitis instead as I often get a sore throat when she has it as that’s my weak spot!
