Low WBC (neutrophils)

Hello. Just looking to see if anyone else has experienced these symptoms my 6 year old is having.

Within the last year he has started having horrific stomach aches - mostly first thing in the morning - usually followed by vomiting. But as soon as he eats he recovers and is fine. And if I can get food into him as soon as he asked with the sore tummy, it prevents the sickness. Along with being super skinny and eats like a horse, so he is rarely really hungry. We removed dairy from his diet. Others in house have a dairy intolerance and it has removed a few of the stomach aches but the “morning” sickness still happens.
Spoke to Gp who sent him for a blood test, no diabetes or thyroid issues.
However, the blood work came back showing up he had a below normal level of neutrophils (WHite Blood Cells). He has been referred to paediatrics to discuss. It is a 20 week wait for an appointment 🤦🏻‍♀️ So I’m pretty certain it can’t be serious?
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their child?
Such a weird mix of symptoms 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi yes my DS has low neutrophils, he is otherwise healthy and only mildly neutropenic (usually around 1.0) so not under a consultant and has been discharged from outpatients. I don’t know about the tummy ache but the hospital will take some history and probably run another blood test. You need to watch for bacterial infections and fevers. If DS has a fever over 38° we go to A&E for monitoring. He’s nearly 10 and has only been admitted to hospital twice.
Don’t panic xx

Thank you, really appreciate your reply. Just such a long time to wait after hearing something like that. But I guess that is what makes me think they’re not overly worried 🤞🏻

I believe coeliac disease can cause low WBC and would explain the tummy problems. Platelets all ok? I would be requesting another blood test in a few weeks just to recheck the other blood counts

Unfortunately, GP is refusing anymore tests until Paeds sees is. However, we ended up back in a&e last night as he had a really bad stomach attack. Double over in agony unable to walk 🤦🏻‍♀️ I didn’t wait for NHS24 and went straight to hosp. He checked out absolutely fine. Doc says his low WBC is marginal and may be his “normal”.
But she has suggested that he could be suffering from “stomach migraines”. Which fit exactly what he suffers from. She obviously didn’t want to confirm until our Paeds appointment, but I think it’s likely. Just wanted to update in case anyone else’s little one is suffering from horrid stomach aches and no idea of the cause. I’d never even heard of them but his big bro suffers from normal migraines which makes it a bigger chance for siblings to get them.

My teenage son has just been diagnosed with abdominal migraines. He gets terrible stomach pains, then is sick. Fine again after he's been sick. I had the same as a teenager

As soon as he starts the tummy pain, give Calpol or similar.
