10-year-old DS with what dimpled chest and tummy and slight boobs? Pre-pubescent perhaps?

I'm feeling anxious about my 10-year-old DS, who has developed slight breasts and also what looks like cellulite over his chest and tummy. I haven't said anything and wouldn't, but feel worried he'll become self-conscious or maybe another chid will say something.

He is exceptionally tall - tallest in his year and taller than most boys in the year above. And naturally broad. And he did put on weight on his tummy during lockdown...my fault entirely and I feel ashamed - I was working and though we did go for a walk at least once a day, really struggled to keep the ball rolling on the exercise front. He's now back at school and doing lots of sport like rugby again etc - we also signed him for a PT which he goes to with my DH. And I've cut refined sugar during week etc so hoping the bit of extra weight on his upper half will fall away. (You wouldn't by the way notice this when he's wearing clothes - it's just when he hasn't got a shirt on you can see it. So he's by know means noticeably overweight.)

What I"m more concerned about is the appearance of the breasts and the texture. It's sort of very dimpled and flabby. Not hard fat at all. I've seen slightly overweight children before, but not with the dimples he seems to have? And he doesn't seem overweight enough to warrant the breasts? Has anyone every heard or seen this in a boy? I wondered if he might be about to have yet another growth spurt - or as a pre-pubescent if the boobs were hormonal? Or if somehow he has too much oestregen or something!!

I will speak to the GP, but would be grateful if anyone has any thoughts or experience of this?

Hi,

My Son has this. Gynaecomastia. He’s 13 in 4 months. He’s quite self conscious about it and by no means ‘obese’. GP said he’s on the higher end of the BMI so to get him a bit more active but that ultimately it happens a lot in puberty for boys and it will go down eventually.
