Can baby be registered with different GP from birth mother?

Hi I’m currently 31 weeks pregnant and looking ahead to when we need to get baby registered with a GP. My GP surgery isn’t great but my wife is registered with a different surgery (they won’t let me transfer as I am already registered with a GP and they are over-subscribed). We would prefer baby be registered with the better surgery (my wife’s one). I will be the stay-at-home parent and will most likely be doing most of the doctors visits, etc.

Does anyone know if I can register baby with a different surgery from myself and does anyone know if this might cause problems, etc?

Any one can take a child to see their own GP such as nanny or grandparents wouldn't be unusual.

Won’t be a problem. My DH isn’t registered at the same surgery as us but has taken the kids to their appointments instead of me.

We did this - my children were registered with my husband's surgery until there was space for me to move over. My go wasn't happy about it and tried to make me change but it didn't last long. My husband was also the stay at home parent so it made more sense for him to be comfortable with taking the children to his GP

Sorry - just realised my situation was the other way round - I stayed at a GP and the kids moved to my husbands, but I still took them for appts and nothing was said!

Should be fine. My husband takes my child to their appointments at my surgery, he's with a different one.

I'd check with the surgery. When I worked as a gp receptionist the baby had to be registered at the same practice as its mother if living with her

This baby has 2 mothers & will be registered at the same practise as one of them.

Not sure how it works from birth, but we moved DD4 from my surgery to DH’s at 6 months old as it was a better option for her.

Perhaps they might want the post birth checks done at the same surgery, but after that I can’t see how it can’t be done. I mean babies who don’t live with biological parents must be registered so it’s no different.

My DC have always been registered at my surgery, though we've now joined DHs surgery. There's never been as issue with DH taking the DC to the GP. The only problem we encountered was MIL taking one when we'd had a massive triple book issue, and they wanted parental consent (all sorted easily over the phone).

Thank you everyone. This reassures me that it’ll probably be fine then. Having two mums does have its advantages as I guess we can just argue that whichever surgery baby is registered with, it’s always going to be the same one as her mother Smile
