Celiac in 2 year old?

Spoke to gp today about concerns re my sons poo. I cannot remember the last solid BM he had, must be months ago! It's not diarrhoea, in the sense that it's once a day, twice a day max and sometimes none one day. But every single one is wet, loose and sometimes it's Sandy/gritty (like he's eaten a full bucket of sand!) and it in turn makes his little bum sore.
I also mentioned my sons height as he is quite small (82cm at 27 months) which the gp told me is the 50th centile on their 'new charts' but I think she's mistaken!
Anyway she referred for blood tests which I called to book today and the first appt is mid July and if I think it needs to be sooner it has to be sorted by the gp.
I suppose my question is- would I be unreasonable to push for the blood tests, or should I just wait it out? He is well in himself I'm just concerned something might be wrong and we have to wait 2 months!

My daughter was diagnosed with coeliac at 14 months. In my area kids just turn up to peads outpatients at the hospital and wait their turn, do you have anything like that?

babytops · 19/04/2021 20:06

Used to be able to but it's now by appt only. It's a dedicated children's hospital so an appt for a blood test with 2 month wait seems mad to me!

If you don't mind me asking what were your daughters symptoms?

Stomach cramps, bloated stomach, very loose stools, classed as malnourished, hardly ate anything, sickness.

Two years later and she's a completely healthy, normal child. I suppose they're not rushing it as he's not having massively horrible symptoms, keep an eye on his weight.

I think I’d try and push it a bit and ask the GP to help you to get the tests done sooner. We’re in a slightly similar situation in that my 2 year old is a very, very slow weight gainer , has very loose poos and seems short. We’ve had a blood test done (not sure if it included celiac screening) and a poo sample. Have you got your red book to hand? I think 82cm at 27 months puts him lower on the charts than 50th centile from what I know of measuring my LO. It’s so difficult feeling like you’re waiting for answers, I can understand your worry but it’s good to hear he seems well in himself.

Have you changed his diet accordingly? My DS (5) has been on a gluten free diet for about a year after going through similar symptoms for months. I cut out dairy for 6 months but it didn't make a difference so I cut out gluten instead and he's much better - growing, more energy, better poos etc.
Our GP is useless, so if I want to test DS I'll probably have to do it privately, but at the moment I feel that we've worked out how to keep him healthier so we'll stick with that for now.

Don't go gf if you want to pursue coeliac screening. You need to have gluten in the system for it to test positive.

Dts suffered from toddler diarreah , they grew out of it around 3 yo.

@thebearandthemare
Yes checked red book and online and it comes up as 0.4th centile- just didn't have them to hand on the phone. Now thinking she may have misheard me and thought I said 92cm!
Yes I definitely swing between 'stop being paranoid' and 'there's something wrong' on a regular basis!

I’m exactly the same, it’s so hard to know whether it’s in the realms of ‘normal’. Have you noticed any dropping down the charts on height, weight or both? Our GP is currently suggesting we just keep an eye on his growth as his bloods were normal but I’m still worried and thinking about whether I need to contact them again. My older child is always around 50th centile or above and that is much more reassuring for my parental worries!

Just to agree with the poster above, do NOT go gluten free before any coeliac blood test as you need to be consuming gluten regularly (two meals a day) for the test to be accurate.

DD has coeliac so we've been through all the testing etc.
