Lumps in almost 4 year old sons neck

Hi everyone so I've posted here before about the same issue.
My son will turn 4 in July, about 4 weeks ago he had a cold, I knew he wasn't well because he was very wingy and tired runny nose etc and a slight cough. I don't know what made me touch his neck as no lump is viable but I did and I felt something move when I felt his neck, it was a lump I'd say about 1.5cm round and movable, I called the doctor the next day who told me it was most likely a reactive node due to his cold and to call back in 2 weeks if it got bigger or was still their, a week later my son came down with another cold, when I checked the lump I felt another one next to it the first lump about the same size, also movable ( although bearing in mind I've been feeling his neck which he is very skinny whilst he was lying down asleep with his neck to the side, so they don't feel this big when you feel them in the normal position, plus I keep touching them alot so I could be making them more bigger than they are) when it hit 2 weeks both lumps where still their, I called the doctor again who didn't want to even check him again he just said it was likely another reactive node due to the second bout of the cold and they can take time to go down and to give it another week or so and call back if they are still their.

As someone who has suffered with lymph nodes since I was a child ( and still do now) I know they don't always take 2 or 3 weeks to go down, some of mine are and always have been permanently up for years now in my neck, behind ears and arms.

They are still their and its been 4 weeks now, no bigger, I'd say they have slightly reduced in size, he has also just a week ago on the same size had an accident and cut just above his eye which needed gluing so I don't know whether that's delaying them going down too.

I've called the doctor back today but I can't even get an appointment with the doctor let alone a phone call, theyve told me to complete an online triage form so I'm waiting to hear back which can take 3 days.

He is completely normal in himself, very active, eating normally etc but I suffer with severe health aniexty and I am thinking the worst and keep breaking down in tears thinking something is really wrong, my husband told me last night to get them checked to at the very least put my kind at rest.

Is this normal? I know it's very common for kids to have swollen nodes but this big? I'd say the about 1.5cm, I do think they've reduced on size slightly but definwgely still there. Just looking for some reassurance 😔

Also forgot to add, the lumps are not visable even when he turns his neck to the side, you can only feel them when touching his neck

I had this with one of mine when he was in reception. They were larger than you describe and sort of felt like two together. Movable. I could see them clearly! He had blood tests (because I insisted, not because they were worried) and all was fine. They didn't fully disappear, he's 8 now and still something is there but you have to dig around to feel them now. Perfectly healthy.

@TheVolturi thank you so much for your reply it's really put my mind at ease. I've managed to get him an appointment at the gp on Wednesday so hopefully that will help make things better

Yes my dd had the same when she was 3. Still there at 7. Just a lymph node that stayed like that. You can’t see it as noticeably now she’s grown

HappyDaysToCome · 19/04/2021 17:27

I saw it in a photo of my nephew when he was 3. I had to tactfully point it out to his mum without alarming her. She took him to doctors and all was fine, just from having a recent cold.

Good you’ve got an appointment with the GP to put your mind at rest.

Thanks everyone for replying, took him to the doctors this morning, wasn't even in there for 10 minutes before she said they are normal lymph nodes, don't know whether it's due to my severe health aniexty but she says they are normal sized lymph nodes and soft and movable, I thought they were much bigger than that probably because I kept on touching them so much. But thankfully my mind has been put at rest

As you suffer from lymph nodes yourself and he is 50% of your genetic makeup, I’d suggest he will be the same as you in many ways.

So whatever you were like as a child he may well be like that too.

So hopefully you can recognise things in future that affected you and put your mind at ease Smile
