Bit of background I have a 16 year old DD. She is very very active usually and is going to college in September to concentrate on her sport. She has always been very active, competitions from the age of 4. In the last 7 weeks she has been having dizzy spells. She hasn't been able to get through a 45 minute zoom class without having to sit down several times whilst the dizziness passes. I mention zoom because these classes are much less intense than the face to face ones she could do easily prior to this. She is more tired than usual but not lying around not functioning tired if you see what I mean. She can get dizzy standing up or walking around but it is mostly when she is exercising. We have been to the doctors and she has had blood tests that we are waiting on the results of and has had an ecg which, thankfully, was all fine. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? She drinks well and eats well (she is fussy but eats a lot)

Sorry and I also meant to say what further questions should I be asking of the doctors if her bloods come back ok?

Could it be low iron? I've been anemic all my life and the dizziness usually happens when I get low.

babypinkelephant · 16/04/2021 12:31

Low blood pressure?

theheartofthematter · 16/04/2021 12:34

I'm hoping it's iron but she does eat quite a lot of iron rich foods. Her blood pressure was checked and it was completely normal

I had something very similar at her age, it was PPPD. Please look into and see if the other symptoms fit, it's very hard to get a diagnoses

I have a DD same age who like yours is very active. Dances 5 times a week normally but with zoom in lockdown it wasn't the same and she was getting dizzy and having to log off halfway through.
Turns out she needed glasses and now she's so much better so would an eye test be an idea?

theheartofthematter · 16/04/2021 14:10

@AnneOfCleavage the sport she does is dance. We considered her eyes being a problem but have recently been and had her eyes tested and got her glasses and even asked the optician and he said it was unrelated.

@SylviaPlath1984 that is really interesting. She says to me quite often that she feels like she is in a dream and not quite there or, yesterday, said I can't feel my legs, I know I am walking but they don't seem to be mine. I will definitely be bringing this up if the bloods don't show anything. What can be done about it?

Could it be vertigo or an inner ear problem? I get labyrinthinitis quite a lot and blocked Eustachian tubes and that makes me so dizzy and off balance in all positions.

theheartofthematter · 16/04/2021 14:26

I am definitely going to ask about her ears as the doctor didn't check them when we went. Weirdly she also didn't ask if she drank enough or about her diet which I would have asked about first if I had a dizzy teen girl in front of me

It sounds classic pppd, there are links to silent migraines too so it's worth looking that up. I have both and there's not a cure as such but 90% of people get significantly better with vestibular therapy and physio. Also anti anxiety medication is a big help, not necessarily for anxiety itself but it numbs the sensations. If you go down the inner ear route it can be a bit of a pain because it's so easy for doctors to fob you off with it, it took me years to find a doctor who finally said ok this isn't your ears!!! But I went from being stuck in the house, unable to leave because of the dizziness and weird sensations to having two kids and moving country and having a totally normal life, I just live with the few symptoms that are left, there is hope. X

Update is that she is folic acid deficient but they don't think that is the cause so she is being referred to the hospital. The GP said it wasn't her ears or anything connected as her dizziness is more feeling faint and ear dizziness makes you feel like you are on a carousel. I will push it further at the hospital though

Have a look at POTS as well, some of the symptoms (brain fog etc) match up well. Something to ask about for sure.

theheartofthematter · 20/04/2021 22:06

POTS is interesting as I have hypermobility and she is getting more symptoms of that.

How did the blood tests go OP?
