Dd (6) needs one of her back teeth taken out, dentist said he'd do it next week or we could wait for a referral to the hospital but it'll be a longgggggg wait.. she's in a lot of pain.. I've booked the appointment for next week, now I'm thinking it's a bad idea and she'll never go to the dentist after this.. any advice how to prepare her? Get her in the chair?

Is it a baby tooth? DD (8) had a premolar out a few months ago without GA. the dentist used a device she called a “wand” to numb the gum; I’m not sure how it worked, but DD could feel the pulling sensation but no pain. The dentist and nurse were lovely; extremely kind and patient and made a big fuss of DD for being so brave.

DD was very nervous beforehand (and I felt a bit useless as I’ve never had an extraction or even a filling, so I couldn’t tell her what it would be like) but we had lots of talks about how being brave wasn’t about being fearless, but about being afraid and doing it anyway. She was old enough to understand why the tooth had to go, and a new toy helped too.

Can your daughter be sedated if she’s really scared?

Poor thing. Since they don't give you the 'magic carpet' anymore... There will be a jab (and they are never nice).

Can she wear headphones with music?
Teach her some basic relaxation techniques (focus on your toes, try to wiggle each one in turn - first your left foot - big toe, wiggle..... etc)
Plan something nice for afterwards (dont make a biggie out of it - more of 'oh I have to go to the XYZ after youve been to the dentist - shall we get XXX?')

A lot of dentists have done hypnosis treatment these days so are pretty good at relaxing their patients.

Aw that story makes me feel a little bit more relaxed... It's a baby tooth, and the dentist said about a numbing cream on the tooth.. she's been so good going to the dentist.. don't want her scared for life.
If she's sedated then she'll have to go to hospital and the wait is going to be really long.. and I don't think I can handle many more sleepless night with her tooth ache. Lol

@toffeebutterpopcorn I'm thinking of putting headphones on her with music.. maybe some blackout glasses and hope for the best.. I've said she can have a toy after..
Our dentist is an old school old man.. doesn't say a great deal, definitely not going to be much comfort or into relaxing her.

I had quite a few baby teeth taken out by the dentist (they seemed to be firmly glued in my head) with just injections OP and honestly I was and am a massive wimp and the idea was far worse than the reality. And that was 25 years ago when the tech wasn't anywhere near what it is now.
To me the gum jabs felt like when you stick your fork in by accident, a definite ouch but not enough to stop you putting the next mouthful in. I'd also tell her to keep her eyes shut tight as I think if you can't see what's happening that helps. If the tooth is hurting her now 'sell' it to her that it's a quick, if a little unpleasant, way to get rid. The tugging feels weird but the relief of it being out will be almost instant especially with it only being a baby tooth so the wound should be shallower.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/04/2021 15:04

My 8 year old had it done and I'm amazed at how well she did. Dentist was excellent, took it really slowly. DD said she could hear the crunching of the tooth being wiggled out but no pain at the time. It did throb quite a lot afterwards so I took paracetamol Calpol with us and she had some of that on the journey home.

lazylinguist · 12/04/2021 15:05

My ds is 13 but his baby teeth are failing to fall out. He had 6 out on Friday and is having another 6 out this Friday Shock. It's not fun, but baby teeth come out fairly easily and at least it's only 1! The worst but is the injection. The actual removal bit takes a few seconds per tooth! Headphones sound like a good plan. Hold her hand and get her to squeeze you hard if it hurts!

Soontobe60 · 12/04/2021 15:14

I’d say give Calpol before you get there, this will give it chance to work. I always take a couple of paracetamol before I have dental treatment - it might be psychological but it helps.

Yupimahelecopter · 12/04/2021 20:12

@Heyha I remember when I was kid I was meant to have mine taken out but freaked last minute and wouldn't let them done it aha I'm scared she'll do the same to me. Lol

@HollyBollyBooBoo that made me cringe the thought of the crunching. I'm glad you dd done so well!

@lazylinguist that's sounds awful.. your poor son.. most be costing you a fortune to get him in that chair lol

@Soontobe60 I'll give her a Calpol and me a him just before going in aha

My DD is 13 but is developmentally delayed with learning difficulties too. She had a premolar removed last week under local. The dentist put some numbing cream on - it was very bitter but she managed - before injecting the anaesthetic. The tooth wasn’t easy to remove but it didn’t hurt. She had to bite down on a gauze swab for 20 minutes afterwards. Her jaw / gum was a bit sore later that day but calpol was effective.

Yupimahelecopter · 12/04/2021 20:21

@BabbleBee the thought of it all makes me a bit faint already Blush I'm glad your daughter was ok..

I think I'd feel better if my dentist wasn't so.... Weird lol he made me leave my 6 month old in the hall with the door open in her cr seat today lol
