Should DD go to A&E?

Hi all,
My DD19 has felt unwell for about 3 weeks with symptoms such as a prolonged headache, pressure in her temples, some dizziness when standing up and tingling in her hands and feet etc. She is a uni student registered with a GP in her uni city, so she had to have a phone call appointment with the GP today. The GP thinks DD is presenting with diabetes symptoms and wanted her to come in that day, but DD is at home 100 miles away and will be for another week. The GP then suggested that DD should go to A&E if she can’t manage to get an appointment with a GP here. I won’t be able to phone to ask about GP appointments with my GP until Monday, but DD doesn’t think she’s particularly ill and argues that our A&E waiting times are very long - my mother was in recently and had to wait for 5 hours. Obviously I don’t want to take liberties with her health if this is as serious as it might be, so I’m asking for advice on whether it would be best to go to A&E tomorrow morning (my opinion) or wait until Monday to try and get her a GP appointment here, or even wait until the Monday after for her to have a GP appointment back in her uni city (her opinion)? There’s no history of diabetes in the family and she’s always been in good health so this is really worrying me. Thanks for any advice.

Do you have a walk in centre near you? If not then follow the GP guidelines, they're the professional and it's Friday so you'll get nowhere for days unless you use another route

EduCated · 09/04/2021 17:56

Phone 111 and ask about out of hours in your area/your DD phones.

Theworldisfullofgs · 09/04/2021 17:58

These are also symptoms of Covid. Has she been tested?

I went to A&E last weekend and waited 90 mins. I think I'd do as the GP suggests

OurChristmasMiracle · 09/04/2021 17:58

call 111 and see if she can get an appt at the out of hours

MissisBoote · 09/04/2021 17:59

Phone 111 and you might get an out of hours GP appt. Better than waiting till Monday.

You should follow the advice that the medically trained professional has given you rather than anything a bunch of randoms on the internet say.

Is she thirsty and peeing a lot? Those are symptoms of diabetes and should not be ignored or made to wait.

IggyAce · 09/04/2021 18:05

Please don’t delay this could be serious, I’m type 2 and the symptoms made me think high blood sugars. From experience if I’ve had a treat and had a high carb meal I’ve suffered a headache. People do died from uncontrolled diabetes.

alexdgr8 · 09/04/2021 18:06

we cannot assess or diagnose her symptoms.
but we can urge you/her to follow the advice of her GP.
just go to A&E.
asap.

I think it's reasonable to assume that if a medical professional has advised going to A&E, that's what you should do.

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/04/2021 18:07

If a GP advised to go to a&e that’s where I would be going, take a book, mobile and headphones.
Oh and a bloody mask!

ShipshapeShore · 09/04/2021 18:18

I would take her. I have type 1 diabetes and if your blood sugar goes too high it causes diabetic ketoacidosis which is incredibly unpleasant and dangerous. A quick blood test will confirm either way. Honestly, tell her it's worth it as if she does have type 1 diabetes she doesn't want to get to the point of ketoacidosis. It is worse than childbirth. Hopefully it isn't diabetes but if it is, it's perfectly manageable and she will likely be just fine.

tearsforfears72 · 09/04/2021 18:19

Thanks so much for the advice. There’s a walk in centre not too far away which I’m going to take her to now to get a blood test etc. Hopefully that will bring us some answers

Fingers crossed for her @tearsforfears72. If a blood test does find t1 diabetes they will want to get some insulin into her in hospital quite quickly - don't panic, it will be fine, but there will be a sense of urgency. I really don't mean to frighten you but forewarned is forearmed! Hope all goes well Flowers

IggyAce · 10/04/2021 16:59

@tearsforfears72 did you get seen at the walk in?
