What's with the tone?
do you know this is not common practice in non Jewish communities in the uk?

ShowOfHands · 09/04/2021 16:36

Er, who are you talking to op?

Gotofriggingsleep · 09/04/2021 16:37

My son was circumcised for medical reasons. I am pretty sure that not having the operation would have caused him a lot more trauma. His dad had the same surgery for the same reasons in his 20s, his recovery was a lot longer and more painful.

LST · 09/04/2021 16:38

Unless for medical reasons I find it barbaric.

Zenab12 · 11/04/2021 16:45

I do actually agree.
Me and my husband are Muslim ( me revert) and our son was circumstised at 7 weeks old due to religious reasons and we got told by family doing it whilst he was a baby would be easier for him. He was my first son after my daughter, I never expected it to be so bad but it destroyed me seeing it and I still get upset about it when I think about it. He is obviously absolutely fine and doesn't remember anything as he was so young but in ways i wish i would have put my foot down and said no until he was older.

If I ever had another son, I won't be doing it again religious or not.

Einszwei · 11/04/2021 16:48

I agree that it should only be performed on children for medical reasons. In this day an age there is absolutely no reason it should continue in the name of religion and personal preference.

littleredberries · 11/04/2021 16:53

I don't know where you come from op, but really only Jews and Muslims get this done in the U.K.

I agree that circumcision sucks, it's just you're preaching to the choir here.

Which is still a lot of people. Do Jews and Muslims not count? Google’s just told me 8.5% of male babies are still circumcised in the uk.
widthofacircle · 11/04/2021 17:10

I think that reasons for circumcision extend beyond religious and medical, my wife is South African and says that it's usual to have this done there, personally as a man I can't understand it being done unless for medical reasons.

Ladies???

In the UK most don't do this and consider it barbaric to remove parts of a child's body

littleredberries · 11/04/2021 17:26

@Insomnia5 of course they do, but I think there's a big difference between circumcision for religious purposes versus cosmetic, which is a big motivator in the USA, for instance. And whilst I am totally against circumcision, no, I would never tell a deeply religious person to ignore centuries upon centuries of their particular way of life. And that's not because their boys don't matter, it's because I don't want to be a tw*t to a religious person.
But I do try to convince those who circumcise for other reasons not to do it.
Why assume the worst out of a person? That they are somehow racist because they don't want to rile at religious people?

HermioneWeasley · 11/04/2021 17:30

@littleredberries FGM is based on centuries of tradition. So are child brides, menstrual huts, ‘honour’ killings and not educating girls. Should we respect those too?

I’m from a Muslim family and refused to circumcise my son because it’s barbaric.

Neonprint · 11/04/2021 17:32

Who are you talking to op and why did you post?

eddiemairswife · 11/04/2021 17:36

It was quite common several decades ago. My ex husband is circumcised and so was my brother.

The only one of those things which is comparable to circumcision is fgm.

Firstly, I think it's great that you made the decision not to circumcise despite that being normative to your religion!

Secondly, I do not understand these Abrahamic religions at all. To me, it's a different world. Therefore I do not think it's pertinent for a white atheist from a wholly different background to come charging in saying what they should or should not be doing to their boys. Because it's also true that in the majority of cases, circumcised boys go on to enjoy healthy sex lives. This is absolutely not the case in fgm.

At no point am I CONDONING this for Muslims and Jews but, yes, I am going to respect them... respect them by stepping aside and allowing others who understand their religions better to have this conversation with them. Such as yourself, and other brave mothers with similar backgrounds.

I'm not going to be more than politely encouraging because I am not a white woman with a saviour complex. Heaven knows if I attempted it I'd be called racist, and that I am most certainly not. I just don't think there's any healthy way I could be part of that conversation. Disagree? Then convince me otherwise! I'm always open minded.

Now, I think I've said all I need to! 🙂 I'm dishing up dinner for my family now so won't be watching this thread

It's not just Jews and Muslims who get circumcised. Many other boys are done for reasons of class or family tradition. Older boys might be circumcised for medical reasons and adults for medical reasons, hygiene or personal preference. Over 20% of males in the UK are circumcised.

Seafordian · 23/05/2022 07:17

True. Many upper class and middle class boys were circumcised at one time. Over 20% of males in the UK are circumcised.

Sockpile · 23/05/2022 07:18

My son was circumcised for medical reasons. It was brutal but for him a necessary evil. I don’t condone circumcising unless it’s a last resort for a medical issue.
