Extreme distress due to wind

Newborn, two weeks old.
After two weeks of blissful happy baby, suddenly he's straining to pass wind and getting extremely distressed because of it. Very gassy and windy, screaming the place down and kicking out his legs and flailing around. It's not all day, so I don't think it's more than just serious wind, but it's really upsetting seeing him like this and I don't know what to do.
I've read about cycling the legs etc, but nothing seems to work. He's formula fed and was fine on it totally until suddenly two weeks in. Is this really normal? Because he's so, so distressed it's unbearable to watch.. :-(

Wind him really well after feeds. I don't know much about formula, but CMPA is really common, so could be something to do with that. Do his poos look normal?

Also, have you tried infacol?

Have you spoken to you health visitor/midwife or GP? Not saying its the case, but my cousins baby had similar for months, but still put on weight. Turned out she had a milk protein allergy. Not lactose intolerant, but milk protein! She was BF though, but can affect bottle fed more acutely.

Gentle baby massage of the abdomen might help get the wind out

A different formula? I'd speak to a professional though.

Could you try winding in the middle of a feed as well as at the end?

Also check the nipple size is correct and he isn't taking in too much air. I found the Dr Brown bottles really helpful in this sense.

I think I read somewhere about walking up and down the stairs with baby's knees up to help with wind but not sure if this was just for burping.

I remember one particularly bad night and we ended up calling 111 as DS was screaming the place down. Because he was formula fed, she advised and said it was ok to give him sips of warm (previously boiled) water and rubbing his tummy (anti-clockwise i think) and it definitely did the trick for us.

Good luck x

Cooked boiled water with a sprinkle of sugar.

Cycle legs and then bend the knees and push up the way.

Tickle bumhole with a tissue with the knees up - it can help.

Feed sitting up and burp in several different positions.

Gastric distress with or without a rash can be a milk allergy. Contact your health visitor to discuss so if this continues for a couple of weeks then talk to health visitor again and ask for a milk challenge.
