Cough - Calpol, Calcough... Piriton? Nurofen?

Hi all

DD (16mo) has a horrid cough and snotty nose at the moment (nursery cold). At 7pm I gave her 5ml of Calpol and 5ml of Calcough (which I think is basically useless but I'm willing to try anything).

Can I now also give her Piriton? Liquid Nurofen?! I don't really want to pump her full of drugs but she's hacking away in bed at the moment, and keeps waking herself up wailing because it obviously hurts/is making her throat sore. Would Piriton help in this circumstance?

I've got a bowl of boiled water with olbas oil in it in her room to keep the air more humid but I'm at a loss 😩

I've got a calpol plug in on at the moment in my 8mo room. She has a bad cough and it seems to be helping a bit. I've also elevated her head so she's not sleeping completely flat.

Should have added that giving nurofen will be fine, it's probably more effective for pain relief if their throat is sore.

Tbh I've found a spoon of honey is just as much use!

Pirition is an antihistamine, do you have any reason to suspect it's allergy related? Any other hay fever symptoms like itchy eyes? If not I dont see why it would help a viral cough

dementedpixie · 04/04/2021 21:28

Piriton might help a blocked nose and is also sedating so might help her sleep

The best thing I've found for a sore throat is difflam spray from the chemist.

crazycatbaby · 04/04/2021 21:29

Piriton can help if she's snotty, as it drips down their throat and makes them cough. I always gave my little boy it when he had a snotty drippy nose and cough at night x

It's too soon for neurogenic

Crappyfridays7 · 04/04/2021 21:32

Second difflam but it tastes horrible
I’d give ibuprofen
Make sure she has plenty to drink probably an hour after any pain meds if she’s awake. Hopefully she’ll sleep and feel better in the morning. It’s horrible when they are poorly you just want to take it away from them.
Hope she’s feeling better v soon & if you’re worried at all seek help

Thanks all. I gave her a small amount of Piriton (most of which got spat out) and a dose of ibuprofen and I feel like it may have died down a bit for now.

I'll check out difflam too!

Thanks
