My child's front tooth will not come out - adult tooth behind. Dentist says to leave it!

My son has had his upper front tooth wobbling since before Christmas. It has always stayed the same amount of wobbly - it just doesn't budge! 8 weeks ago the new tooth came through behind and is well on it's way to being completely grown. We are used to the new tooth coming in first - it happened with his 2 bottom teeth too. But after coming in for 2 weeks, the old tooth became wobbly and then fell out.
This has been 4 months! I took him to the dentist 3 weeks ago who said just encourage him to wobble it (we were), eat apples (we already did) and basically all the stuff we had already tried.
My son is now having comments made by other children as the front tooth sticks out of his mouth when his face is relaxed.
Can anyone offer any useful advice?! The tooth seems to be happy with staying, and we are not so happy!

No advice really, DS1 had the opposite, baby tooth fell out and adult tooth has taken nearly 3 years to come through. Dentist kept saying it would be fine but I was quite worried. It was fine though.

I had a baby tooth removed when I was about 12, as the adult teeth had grown in front of and behind it. I had 4 adult teeth removed at the same time though as my mouth was too small to fit all my teeth in (my teeth were a mess!) Blush

This happened to me, dentist said to wait and the adult tooth ended up twisting to fit around the baby tooth root. So when I finally had the baby one taken out the adult tooth came down completely crooked. Take it out for sure! I ended up having years of braces to fix the issue

Yes leave it - the new tooth will naturally move forward

Happened to both my kids

I had this with a molar, it pushed all my teeth out of line at the back and even now as an adult they're out of line and uncomfortable. I had that baby tooth removed eventually at 16 but my teeth are very crooked back there and catch on my tongue a lot.

Shark teeth Smile. My boy had this but they do eventually come out, be patient. Didn't lose the second one until his 10th birthday!! They are straightening up nicely now.

This just happened with DSS(7). It started wiggling in November, new tooth came in behind in December/January and it finally came out last week on its own. Just encourage him to keep wiggling it.

I assumed that is what would happen, as it did with the others. But the new tooth doesn't seem to be budging it, which is the issue. I did add a pic but MN seem to be having real issues in adding pics at the minute. I'll try again now.

We had this. I made it my mission to make DS wobble it anytime he was sat down.

He'd be sat in front of the telly, or waiting for breakfast and I'd shout at him 'wobble that tooth!!'. It came out soon enough. 😄

Spudbyanyothername · 03/04/2021 20:40

We had same last month! Strongly encouraged the wobbling, side to side, front back and twisting too. Eventually made a bit of progress and when a little looser much easier to wobble.
Spent a week shouting “wobble” whenever I remembered to remind him Grin

No amount of wobbling has done the slightest thing to it! It is no different to when it first became wobbly. Sad

DS tooth was from pre Christmas too, was top left and jutted out, nearly at a right angle in the end - quite solidly, with other tooth behind.

Bluebutterfly36 · 03/04/2021 20:56

My DS had the same and the dentist did extract the tooth in the end (I can’t remember how long we waited I’m afraid). He didn’t want to risk it coming through wonky and then not being able to realign itself or affecting the other teeth. My DS had to have lots of injections into his gum for the anaesthetic (which was awful to watch but amazingly at the time he was fine with it, he would never be able to manage it now). So I would just bear that in mind for your DS. Also ask the dentist to confirm that it will not affect the other teeth if you leave it?

JerryMoreIceCream · 03/04/2021 21:09

If the dentist who has seen your son's teeth tells you to leave it and it will sort itself out that is who I would listen to.

Ds1 grew his adult teeth in behind his baby teeth, his teeth are now perfectly straight, no intervention just the dentist seeing him every 6 months.

Ds2 did the same but his wobbly baby tooth got less wobbly as the adult tooth came down, almost like it pushed it into a new tighter position. Again, this sorted itself out. He did have a relatively good sized gap between his front adult teeth to the extent I did wonder whether he would need a brace for cosmetic reasons (ie we pay) but again, they are very straight and have come together.

You will be amazed at how much teeth move around. My sons are now 18 and 15 but "shark teeth" is very common. I am a fan of wobbling teeth when they are loose but never pulling them.

I eventually had to have 8 baby teeth removed by the dentist as had exactly this situation. Had two rows of teeth top and bottom. The dentist said that the roots on the baby teeth were so long they wouldn't have fallen out by themselves! It took long years of braces to reposition my adult teeth to how they look now. But I think this was unusual!

We got it out. Oh my word, the crying, the blood... but it is out. Thank fuck Easter Grin. I believe the tooth fairy is rewarding this one handsomely!

We had this with a molar which grew through the remains of a baby tooth - leaving 4 'corners' three of which fell out over about a year. The last was causing issues, inflaming the gum etc. Dentist wouldn't touch it, orthodontist wanted it out, dentist said no. Orthodontist in the end nudged it out, and for what looked like a toenail - oh the blood!

dementedpixie · 04/04/2021 14:58

I dont think upper ones should be left as long as bottom ones as the tongue helps nudge bottom ones out and doesn't affect the top teeth as much.

How long do they want you to wait?
