Crying in pain after long walk

My son is 4 years old, about a year ago he started crying that his legs hurt in the night, we thought growing pains. Now it seems to be whenever we’ve been for a walk during the day, he cries that night and it’s usually the same leg, sometimes his knee - sometimes his foot. Has anyone experienced similar with their child? I think I’m going to ring the doctor next week.

See your GP and given duration I'd push for testing asap. There are paediatric conditions that can cause pain in legs/hips. Hip pain can refer to knees. If it is one of these conditions you'd need x-rays of leg from hip to toes to check out where the problem is.

My son had sever’s disease - although think he had it in primary school rather than so early. It’s very common - just pain caused by the fact that kids heel bones don’t fuse until teens and this can cause inflammation in the heel after long walks. Physio gave him inserts to go in his shoes and exercises). He wore the orthotics until he was about 13 I think.

(And symptoms were pain at night in the legs after going for a walk/playing football)

DS2 had similar, turns out he was extremely hypermobile. He had some physio and we took him swimming a lot which helped.

see a gp.
some inflammatory conditions are worse at night.
or it could be coming from the hip.

is it mainly one leg?
is he otherwise well?
a good height for his age?
eating well?
alert and active?

  • and absolutely give dc painkiller if they are crying with pain!

Thanks everyone will be phoning the doctors on Tuesday. He is very active, otherwise well, he is very tall and has very long legs. It is mainly his left side, can be his leg, knee or foot hurting. I’d wondered if it was cramp or something but we don’t seem to feel tight muscles.
