Omeprazole Losec MUPS advice

Hi all, my 7 week dd was prescribed omperazole liquid at first at 5.5 weeks by her GP. It was 10mg 1.4ml. She was then seen by consultant paed after GP did an instant referral as she was worried. Paed prescribed her omperazole 10mg tablet and she went on this 4 days later. The in hospital pharmacy prescribed it and told me to disolve in 5mls sterile water and syringe in and make sure any little bits of powder are mixed again and syringed in. Anyone who has used this knows how difficult it is! What we are now doing is placing the disolved granules on the teat of water bottle and dd takes them and drinks the water at the same time. This is the easiest way we have found to get most of the dose down her. My main concern now is the size of the dose. It's 10mg. It's an adult dose is it not? On the box it says "one tablet to be disolved in water and taken" however after reading other people's experiences, I am wondering was it meant to be 10mg disolved in water and 5mls to be given as they gave me a 5ml syringe? I have tried calling pharmacy department today but there is nobody there and consultant not there either. It has made some improvement but not loads and I am worried I am overdosing my baby now. She always seems very distressed for a couple of hours after having it but that may just be because it's difficult to administer and we hold her off her milk for 20 minutes after and she gets very annoyed! Anybody else had to give to it to such a young baby? And what were your doses? TIA

It's based in weight. The maximum dose is 3mg per kg, so as long as she is over 3.5kg then the dose is with in the limits.

My little one was on this from 8 weeks and the highest she got to was 4.5mls with her weight and she was on it till she was 8 months old so 5mls is defo to much! We use to dissolve the 10mg tablet in 10ml off water and then give her what the doctor said most syringes are 5ml x

I think it seems a high dose as its essentially a whole 10mg tablet. The directions on the box and what the pharmacy assistant told me was one tablet to be dissolved and administered and they just gave me a 5ml syringe to do it. However the assistant was not very helpful as I asked, did I need to give the whole tablet and she said yes. I then tried to ask her the best way to administer etc as obviously have never done this before and was very impatient with me and just said disolve it and any powder that is left, redisolve and give it again. I know adults who have taken this 10mg dose so it just seems an awful lot. She weighs 4.2kg at the moment.

Sorry, I just re read this. So her dose is OK for her weight then. Thanks for advice.

Is there anyway you can contact doctor to ask as I said my little one was over a stone at 15 weeks and still wasn't even on the 4.5ml I would defo check before giving anything that's for sure to be safe it was always the doctor I had to phone with her weight and then they would recalculate it as when it wouldn't settle her anymore that's when I knew her dose needed to be upped X

Hi,

You can reassure yourself of the dose here; bnfc.nice.org.uk/drug/omeprazole.html

There are lots of different conditions that it is used for but if you look under the reflux or acid dyspepsia sections you'll see up to 3mg/kg once a day listed.

Different conditions and different severity of the same condition, require different doses which may explain why other people have used other doses.

MN wouldn't let me post a screen shot.

As the dose means you're giving the whole tablet... depending on the size of the syringe you may be able to pop the tablet in the syringe, draw up some water and give it a shake to dissolve it. You can break the tablets (but you shouldn't crush them as it will damage the enteric coating on the granules in them). After giving the dose, if it looks like there are any granules still stuck in the syringe, draw up another couple of ml of water and give that too, to ensure the full dose is given.
