Newborn hearing test failed

movingmelly · 26/03/2021 00:10

Newborn was tested for hearing in hospital. His right ear was fine, but she said no feedback from his left ear. She said it may still have fluid in from birth (section) but I'll have to go to the hearing clinic with him.
Worried! Does this mean he might be deaf in one ear?
Does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing? Thanks!

Both my c section babies had this. They were both clear when we took them back a couple of weeks later. They said it’s very common after a section as the fluid doesn’t get squeezed out during birth. I’m sure it’ll be fine when you go back Smile

Whysotired · 26/03/2021 08:43

My niece had this also. Had to go back a month later and all was fine. Try not to worry too much. Apparently it’s more common than you think xx

Suzie81 · 27/03/2021 14:30

Both my kids failed in one ear on these tests after birth. Both then passed the follow up test with flying colours. Honestly, wouldn't worry.

Willow4987 · 27/03/2021 14:32

Both my DC failed this test - one VB and one CS birth. Both were fine at the check up. It was just fluid and I think it’s fairly common. Don’t worry yet

happinessischocolate · 27/03/2021 14:34

If there's no history of hearing loss in your family then it'll probably be fine as others have said it is very common, and I believe hearing problems are generally hereditary.

Superstardjs · 27/03/2021 14:46

OP I am not trying to worry you AT ALL and everything is probably fine. However, I must address the pp's comment - the majority of Deaf children are born to hearing parents. The tests are nothing scary but I know how anxious you will be. Try not to think about it and do not drive yourself crazy making noise near him or scrutinising every reaction.

My 2yr old wasn’t tested until 2 weeks okd and passed straight away. My 10week old failed in one ear at 5hours old, passed with flying colours in this ear at 5 days. So please don’t worry

GivenchyDahhling · 27/03/2021 16:42

Exactly the same with my DS. Went back in a couple of weeks and no problem at all. The nurse who carried out the test wasn’t a bit concerned at the time and neither was I - I barely even registered it. After the event DH told me he had been very worried about it. I don’t know why I wasn’t - possibly because my instinct was that everything was fine?

FTEngineerM · 27/03/2021 16:44

Those tests monitor the tiny hairs’ response inside the ear well that’s what the hcp said when she did it so as others have said, if the fluid hasn’t been squeezed out those hairs won’t be able as mobile if at all. Good luck.

GrumpySausage · 27/03/2021 16:51

My DD had this. They did it twice at the hospital as we were in for a few days post c section. I began to get worried when she didn't pass the 2nd time but the lady reassured me it was quite common with c section babies.

Had her tested again at a few weeks old and passed with no issues.

Phillipa12 · 27/03/2021 16:54

My dc1 failed his newborn hearing, he was a section, we went back multiple times and by 12 weeks old he was diagnosed with moderate bilateral hearing loss and he was aided, there is no hearing loss in the family . Firstly all the pps are probably correct, it will just be fluid causing the loss, but for reassurance let me tell you dc1 was the earliest of all 4 of my dc to speak, he's now 12 and in secondary with many friends, his hearing loss has never made him stand out despite the bright green hearing aids he chooses to wear. His teachers all know how to use the extra equipment he needs to hear lessons properly and he is progressing well in all subjects. I hope your worry is unfounded but I also hope that what I have written makes you less fearful of hearing loss.

myotherusernameisonholiday · 27/03/2021 17:09

This is vague because it was a good few years ago now. They couldn't get an accurate read on DC1 hearing test, left ear was worse than right. The next test was better but still not good enough to pass so we were referred to hearing team. We went every 6 months for a hearing test, one ear passed the test at 18months I think, the other at 2.5 years. DC suffered from ear infections a fair amount as a young child, I think they had narrow ear canals which probably didn't help, but all is fine now. I hope all goes well at the next test OP.

squiddybear · 27/03/2021 17:38

Same here OP. DS was fine at the second test so try not to worry

Clockingon · 27/03/2021 17:47

My youngest had this in one ear due to being born in intact amniotic sac.
Because it was one ear and they said there was no feedback at all I was told it was most likely to be fluid rather than being deaf. When rechecked there was no issue.

I didn't say about the parents being deaf, I said if there are hearing problems in the family. There's a difference, and a quick search on the internet says 50-60% of deafness is genetic, although I know I've read a higher statistic for hearing loss in general
Newborn hearing test failed
FlowerTink · 28/03/2021 09:36

Both mine were section babies and failed it. My eldest passed the test in hospital a few days later. My youngest had to go to the clinic and I worried but they got a reading straight away.

MindyStClaire · 28/03/2021 09:54

Both of mine failed it, both sections. DD2 managed to pass just before we left the hospital thanks to the lovely lady coming back to us repeatedly, DD1 we brought back a week or two later. No drama, aside from having to get a newborn out of the house at a particular time. Grin
