7 yr old bloodshot dull eyes - now getting poorly

About a week ago, the corner of DS's eye became pink/bloodshot. No pain, swelling, discharge, irritation. I noticed that both his eyes looked a bit dull - as in the whites aren't as white as normal. A few days later, the other eye became very slightly pink. He does wear glasses but has done for about 3 years.

He's been absolutely fine other than that but tonight he says he feels like he has no energy and a bit achey with a slight headache.

Any ideas what's up with his eyes? And would it be connected to him feeling poorly today even though I first noticed his eyes a week ago?

The only thing is @Onynx and @Nextyearwillbefun that this all started over 2 weeks ago. Surely if it was covid he'll test negative now anyway? I had no idea this could be a sign of covid - I would have kept him off school and tested him had I known.

You say you get anxious about things like this, yet in two weeks you haven’t taken any action, I’d think if you were that concerned you would have had him checked by now 🤷🏼‍♀️

Icequeen01 · 04/04/2021 23:59

I've had Covid and I'm not able to test either on a lateral flow (which incidentally didn't pick up on me or 12 of my work colleagues when we were all positive!) or a PCR for 90 days as I could still get a positive result. I would get your DS tested as it could still pick it up and at least then you will know.

Onynx · 05/04/2021 04:56

@Corblimeyguvnor1 the virus can be detected in your system for quite a while. It is v important to have him tested- and if he is negative then at least you will know to follow up with an optician or gp. Quite unfair to take him into an optician if he may have the virus.

Corblimeyguvnor1 · 05/04/2021 09:48

@HerMammy yes - because I usually panic about any minor illness or symptom and I'm always trying to control my tendency to overreact to these things and not to waste a GP's time. And over those 2 weeks his eyes kept getting better then getting pink again. So now I've booked him an appointment. I'm not sure that implying I'm not really concerned is helpful.

I’m merely pointing out that you’ve started a thread two weeks ago about health concerns but done nothing but post on MN, seems a bit lax to me, don’t post if you don’t like differing opinions 🤷🏼‍♀️

Corblimeyguvnor1 · 05/04/2021 10:08

I booked him an appointment a few days after posting on here. Unfortunately I couldn't get one immediately hence he hasn't been seen yet. In that time, I've been continuing to post to try to hear other experiences to alleviate my worries. Everyone else who's posted has been helpful and kind. You've not offered an opinion on what might be wrong, you've used the opportunity to try to make me feel like some awful, neglectful parent - forgive me if I don't find that helpful.

Update - optician said it was likely some kind of mild irritation and his eyes look fine although a little bit dry. Suggested eye drops. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

Hello op, my son is going through this now. Did it continue or did it stop ?

Cocothebear · 12/03/2022 02:33

Just saw this and haven’t had time to read responses but my DD 8 had Covid 2 years ago and it started with the white part of her eye going pinky/bloodshot, nothing else then she developed symptoms a Few days later. She’s currently off school with omicron and the same thing happened again it was her first symptom so I knew it was Covid before anything else started. Weirdly exact same part of the same eye

Corblimeyguvnor1 · 21/03/2022 23:50

@veeb16 it stopped with the help of eye drops - think it was just a mild eye irritation, just had to keep reminding him not to rub his eyes which was prolonging it. Hope your son is ok.
