Acid indigestion - Gaviscon for children or other remedy?

DS aged 9 was prescribed Gaviscon (adult version) for a month for stomach pain. It's like a magical wonder drug and worked instantly. Called Dr after a month of use and she said we can't use it long term. Try and manage pain without it.

We are trying diet changes and adding ginger but he still suffers.

Does anyone know of an alternative to Gaviscon that works for acid indigestion?

Have you tried something like Rennies?
Surely they should be investigating the pain more thoroughly though

Thanks dementedpixie Rennie is also 12 and over. I think you are right I will take him back. It would be better to understand the cause than treat the symptoms.

Milk of magnesium is a god sent its basically chalk water it can be drank neat or added to ordinary milk to hide the taste just make sure you get the original one and not the flavoured ones as they're vile

What about whole cows milk?

Are they looking into the causes of this?

If the pain is being caused by acid reflux, the gp should be able to prescribe omeprazole to take daily, which reduces the amount of acid in the stomach and prevent the pain. It is licenced in children so dont let the gp fob you off! Definitely worth trying to get to the bottom of the pain, maybe keep a food diary? Does it get worse when he is worried? But the gp shouldn't be leaving him in pain.

Yes it does get worse with stress. I suspected this but his teacher also independently mentioned it came on when when he was doing some difficult maths. And thank you for the tip I will ask GP.

He had blood taken and ceoliac (sp?) Was ruled out but that's it. We cut out milk but not all foods containing milk and it didn't makes difference.
