Yes, please post what the issue is and I'll have a look.

No, not always, but often.
What is their current prescription, your husband and yours? Do you have a very short-sighted mother.

Huge thanks for your reply

I am -6 as is my mum
My dad is fine
Husband is better than 20/20, he can read two or three lines below?!

Son is currently .25 on one side with .25 astigmatism of on both. He had a massive growth spurt before being tested.

What do you think?

The statistics are something like 40% chance of a child going short sighted if one parent is (goes up to 60% if both pre to are short sighted).

*parents (not pre to) Hmmblooming phone

If he's 13 and only just -0.25 I would say he's very unlikely to get as high as a -6 like yourself.

GP - not an expert like optometrists but it is possible to reduce myopia in those at high risk - may still be myopic but not as severe, using contact lenses and atropine eye drops.

underneaththeash · 23/03/2021 13:40

He won't get anywhere near -6.00DS if he's only -0.25 now. I'd reckon -1.50 at most.

Myopia is partially environmental, sitting in front of a pc really hasn't helped lots of children's visual development and you may even find that that -0.25 goes away now that his life is hopefully less screen based.

The best thing he can do is not use a screen excessively, when he does need to have regular breaks at least every 30 minutes when he's looking at something in the distance. He also needs to have at least an hour outside most days as that too has a protective effect on myopia development.

Unless he's complaining that he can't see, I'd recommend another test in 6 months.

Not an optician, but for comparison, my elder DC needed glasses at 5. His eyesight detiorated rapidly and at one point there was an NHS review as he was needing at least a 3 month check and always needed new glasses. He's now as an almost 21 year old - 10.5 and - 9.75 astigmatism in both eyes. DS2 didn't need glasses until he was a teen maybe age 13/14 Currently - 1.0 but can do without for general wandering about and he's nearly 20. He needs them for TV and driving. DH and I both shortsighted and with astigmatism. I'm roughly - 4 and he's roughly - 5.
