2 weeks old and jaundice

Hoping someone can reassure me! So DS is 2 weeks old today and was very jaundice when first born. He is still jaundice but it has improved a lot. He has had 2 blood tests because of it and the levels have come back fine both times. On day 10 when the midwife came to visit she said she still wasn’t happy with it and made him an appointment to see another midwife at the hospital for today. At the appointment, the midwife said jaundice would have usually have gone by now so I have to take DS to the children’s department at the hospital in the week (waiting for a phone call for the appointment) She said they will want to check his liver, take some bloods, and try and get a urine sample from him incase it is due to infection. I have got myself into a state about it (especially the liver part) and can’t stop worrying. Has anybody else had a baby with prolonged jaundice? And if so was everything ok?

Me! It’s very common. When I was at the clinic for the tests, they said if baby had one of the rare conditions they checked for, they would literally be olive green Confused they said they have only had one or two babies come through the door with jaundice that bad which has turned out to be an underlying condition. It’s very precautionary so please don’t worry. If you’re breastfeeding you can pop them on the boob while they have the tests. Congrats Flowers

Mine had the same. It's just to double check all is fine. We had further checks at the hospital and that was the end of it.

DD did 4 years ago. Had to gave blood tests and give urine samples. We were allowed to go home but told we'd have a call within an hour if we had to come back. No call and it cleared within another couple of days.
There was another baby there for the same thing whose mum was at my antenatal classes so I think it is common!

My DD had severe jaundice as a newborn (she was a month early). If they've checked your son's bilirubin levels then try not to panic. Jaundice can be serious but ime they're very proactive about treating it. My daughter stayed jaundiced until she was about 8 weeks old and had to go to a prolonged jaundice clinic, all fine! As PPs have said, just keep feeding him as much as possible and try to keep him in sunlight during the day (hard at this time of year!) - UV light breaks down the bilirubin. I parked DD's moses basket in the window!

Mine had this and was a dinky skinny little babe who I worried desperately about. He's now a huge healthy four year old.

I know it's worrying at the time but the likelihood is that everything is fine, and it's just a precautionary check. Handhold though - I remember the fear. x

Dd was the same, long after 2 weeks, she looked like she'd been on a beach holiday! It cleared up on its own a few weeks in

BakewellGin1 · 14/03/2021 17:43

We stayed in hospital for 5 days to due a traumatic birth plus DS being jaundice...

We then went home for four days and were readmitted for three more days onto children's ward to go back under the UV light and had his bloods took every 12 hours.

He was still jaundice for a week ish (so until he was approx 3 weeks) once released.

No lasting complications for him.

Hope all goes well.

My eldest (he's 23 this year) had Jaundice, was on a bili bed, for 8 days after he was born, he came back down to a normal colour, and was discharged.. but was still jaundiced/yellow 19 days later.
We had to go back to hospital, where I was advised to feed more and often, and leave mostly, by a sunny window or in the garden for sunlight.
Like I mentioned he's 22, he's normal ishGrin??

Sparkles556 · 14/03/2021 18:25

Awww thanks everyone your comments have made me feel much betterSmile So it is very common then! Other than the jaundice everything else is spot on with him so I’m going to try and stop worryingGrin Thanks again!

DS2 had prolonged jaundice, we had the tests at the hospital to rule out anything concerning at around 4ish weeks. All fine!

He stayed jaundiced until 9/10 weeks and then it cleared. He's now nearly 2 and a bouncing, chatty, happy, healthy toddler!

The clinic at the hospital were pretty relaxed to be honest, it's all very precautionary. Congratulations on your new baby!

CreosoteQueen · 20/03/2021 05:36

Jaundice is very common in babies! Mine had jaundice on and off for at least 10 weeks. I was told it’s completely normal for it to take that long to clear in breastfed babies. We had a blood test at one point when he looked especially yellow and it came back clear. He’s now 3.5 months, jaundice free and healthy as a horse.

Congratulations on your new baby! Flowers

Ds also had this about 20 years ago! It is v common. When we got referred to the paediatric ward, they did pick up that he had a chest infection and once that was treated, the jaundice started improving too. Good luck!
