Toddler night time cough

Evening all

My nearly 2yo has had a horrible winter for bugs - colds, viruses, croup, back to back bugs, the lot.

Sometime around 6 months ago (hard to pinpoint when) she developed a night time cough. I assumed this was part of all the bugs she had, but she’s come through the bugs now and the cough has stuck. Halfway through the night, every night, she wakes with a dry cough that goes on for at least 10/15 minutes. She doesn’t wheeze or seem to struggle, it sounds like an annoying cough like something is tickling her throat. I did have a phone appointment with the Gp 6 weeks ago or so who prescribed the blue inhaler but it hasn’t made much difference. We normally sit her up and give her some water and after a few minutes she settles and only coughs occasionally thereafter.

Has anyone else had this please? We have thoroughly cleaned and hoovered her bedroom, change sheets regularly, air the room out etc in case anything is irritating her but it doesn’t help.

Any suggestions (or solidarity!) welcome.

TIA

Go back to GP. If blue inhaler isn’t working and asthma is suspected rather than post viral wheezing, they might offer an inhaler that reduces inflammatory response for about 8 weeks to see if that helps.

In the meantime, bowl of water on the radiator to humidify the air, change the pillow, if one is used and hot wash bedding to remove dust mites.

Thanks, I will phone the GP tomorrow. He didn’t mention a diagnosis at the time but will ask about asthma. I was hoping she would grow out of it as the weather gets better Sad

When I was little I had a cough only at night. I was on the blue inhaler as doc suspected asthma. I think it was my dad that questioned at the time I was only coughing in the night.. never in the day... after a long while him trying to figure it out.. dust mites in the matress.. new matress.. cough gone! I'm still allergic to dust/mites now x
