Kidney infection in boys?

confusednortherner · 07/03/2021 18:07

Ds 12 has announced mid afternoon his tummy hurts on lower right, I fob him off thinking he's thinking about school when he reappears and tells me this morning he went for a wee and it was red. I asked him if he's been since and yes but it was darker and he flushed it away. He's just went again in a jam jar and it's dark reddy brown. Obviously I'll be phoning gp first thing but is this likely to be an infection?
My only experience of that much blood in wee was a friends dd who had bladder cancer so not exactly helped!

Anyone please?

He probably needs to see a doctor doesn’t he? ...today if still has the pain (appendicitis can cause bladder irritation)/appears unwell.

I'd speak with 111 tonight, they'll probably organise an out of hours GP appointment. Sounds a bit odd - lower right makes you think more of appendix, as the kidneys are higher up and round the back. But urine that colour may mean kidney infection or inflammation.

He doesn't seem particularly ill.... says it hurts slightly but has just ate a full roast!
I did think it seemed a odd place for kidneys, feel like I'd be wasting out of hours time at minute but will keep checking him in case.

Not to worry you, but I would want to seek medical advice this evening rather than wait until the morning.

As a previous poster said it could be appendicitis, and if it's a kidney infection it'll need antibiotics as soon as possible to ensure it doesn't worsen.

Any pain on passing wee?

confusednortherner · 08/03/2021 13:49

111 said gp in morning, he's seen gp and we are currently sitting waiting to be seen in children's ward.....

Hope you've been seen and they know what's causing it.

Hi @confusednortherner how did you get on?

confusednortherner · 08/03/2021 21:10

They think it's a kidney stone but did query appendicitis first. The blood in urine is far less but still some pain.
Bloods are clear for infection but waiting for some more that take a couple of days and they are arranging a scan. We've been sent home for now but have number to call and go in directly if anything changes.

We are still looking for answers. Been in hospital all day again through gp as ds still in pain. Ultrasound shows no stones, surgeons have ruled out appendicitis and nearly got home but pead doc got urology to check scan and they see thickened bladder and something about flow from kidneys.
They are referring for more tests and to see urologist. I made mistake of googling which was a very bad idea!
