What does this sound like?

Eldest (nearly 11) who does lots of exercise (did competitive gymnastics prior to lockdown so was in gym 12 hours a week) has started to get out of breath when exercising.
She's training at home, predominately conditioning work and she's finding that she get's out of breath and breathes heavy. She gets her breath back within a few minutes but said it's making her legs tired and "light".
Due to her doing her zoom classes in another room we wasn't aware until she told us and I sat in one day and listened and she kind of wheezed at times but like she said was able to get her breath back after sitting down for a few minutes.
We have eventually managed to get through the to doctors and are now waiting for a call from the doctors.
Does it sound like asthma and if it is do children just become asthmatic all of a sudden? She does suffer with hayfever which sometimes brings on a cough but only started with her breathing issues the last couple of months.

Could be asthma. Mine presented with a cough?

TheMostHappy · 25/02/2021 12:53

Sorry pressed post to soon. I became asthmatic in my early 20s. I was fobbed off for a year or so prior to diagnosis. It took me actually walking in to the surgery having a fulll on asthma attack wheezing down the hall way to be taken seriously.

No cough, just wheezy and out of breath and tired legs.

Could it be a blood pressure issue?

SingingWaffleDoggy · 25/02/2021 12:58

Anaemia? Especially if she’s started her periods? Wouldn’t be responsible for a true wheeze but sometimes that could just be a symptom of the breathlessness and tiredness. If you’ve got an oximeter might be worth popping it on her finger when she’s feeling light headed

itsme1234 · 25/02/2021 12:59

Wellysock would we be able to check blood pressure at home and what would cause blood pressure issues?

No not started periods. Have an oximeter so will check.

I developed asthma at age 11. I would get that checked out.

Moonshine160 · 25/02/2021 14:39

It could be asthma. And it’s more common with hayfever sufferers. I didn’t get asthma until I was 17.

Wellysock · 26/02/2021 23:35

@itsme1234 I don't know if you could check it at home, I'm not sure how that works with children.

Low blood pressure can just be one of those things, I'm not sure about underlying medical conditions but I had low blood pressure as a child (it's still on the low side as an adult) and the light legs sounded familiar. I was a big old fainter too.

Anaemia is also a possibility. Is she eating enough for the exercise she's doing?

I hope you had some luck with the doctor.

Has she had/could she have had covid? Sounds like it could possibly be long covid like symptoms.
