Ptosis surgery

Has anyone had ptosis surgery? But where you cannot shut your eyelid down / blink once it's been operated on? Or your child? Looking for some advice desperately

I discussed this with someone on a thread a while back, but it was only the two of us that posted! Here it is anyway, the other poster had some useful info

@mnahmnah was it your child that needed the surgery?

My dd needs the surgery doing but using a silicone piece instead of from her leg
She to won't be able to shut her eye afterwards and needs gel and drops in the day. Just wondered about anyone's experience and how there child was after it. If they looked better or not after and if it helped. If they coped with it being open at night using the gel. At the moment I open it for her with a tape (from a eye patch) she's nearly 3 but that isn't a helpful long term solution

No but my DS, who is also 3, has ptosis and the doctor said when he was about 1 I think that we would just have to wait and see when he’s older. It’s not too noticeable at the moment. Some doctors want to do it earlier, some prefer to wait until they’re older. But it does worry me that he might need to go through surgery on it, so I’m always interested in what others say.

I’m full of sympathy for you. It’s tough.

sillyjilly90 · 23/02/2021 22:31

I think because my daughters eye is fully shut, that's why they want to do it soon, can your son blink if he had it done? It's just the muscles to lift it up that don't work? My daughter has the issue with both

The doctors said very little to be honest about what would need to be done. Just that we would review it when he is five. It’s only slightly droopy at the moment. Sometimes you can’t tell, others it’s really noticeable. I really hope someone who has had it done comes along!

Not me personally but my best friend now 40 had an op on her ptosis as a small child. I didn't know her then All I know is she came through it fine and is all good now, just has a small amount of scarring above her eyebrows which she covers with her fringe .

DailyCandy · 24/02/2021 18:33

I had this surgery as an adult. My London based surgeon was great if you want a second opinion on the surgical approach... PM me if you would like details.

DailyCandy · 24/02/2021 18:33

My surgeon operated under the lid...no scarring

sillyjilly90 · 24/02/2021 18:47

Can I ask are you able to blink? @DailyCandy

OP posts:
DailyCandy · 24/02/2021 20:16

Yes I can - but I didn't have a severe ptosis, the lid of one eye was just dropping to cover more of the iris than on the other.

sillyjilly90 · 24/02/2021 20:28

@DailyCandy oh okay I see. That's good! Can't seem to find anyone that's had it really severe and they can't blink Blush

Have you checked for support groups on face book?
There’s a huge group called ‘for little eyes’ which I used to be on (DS wore glasses since a young baby). I bet you’ll find others there with kids having had ptosis surgery.
I hope it all goes well, I’m sure this is really stressful. Fingers crossed your DD adjusts quickly.

DailyCandy · 24/02/2021 21:23

There is apparently a group on FB called ptosis baby
