My 2 day old baby has developed a red area on the whites of one of her eyes, does anyone know what this could be? It was never there in hospital just now today? Anyone know what this can be? I'm worried!!

If I'm remembering rightly, then I think it's quite a normal reaction to being squeezed out in labour! I would mention it to your midwife when you see them, but I'm pretty certain that it's fairly common.

Just googled: "You may notice a blood red spot in the white area of one or both of your newborn's eyes. This spot, as well as the general puffiness of a newborn's face, are most commonly caused by pressures exerted during labor. Although you might find them a bit worrisome at first, fortunately both tend to fade in a few days."

Generally though, don't google. No one blogs "I saw this and it wasn't an issue" they blog "I saw this and although 99999999 times this would be normal, mine was the 1 time it wasn't."

@woriedmum

Checked one of my dc's baby pictures and they had a spot in both eyes at 2 days old. I'm not sure when it cleared, but it looks clear at 14 days.

Ps it's normal to worry!

Thank you both. It wasn't there before discharge when they did the baby check ect. I just phoned the postnatal ward for advice as I was told I could call for any concerns as it's only been two days since birth yet she told me to take baby to A and E which is for emergencies and why would she advise that with Covid at the moment. I thought they were supposed to be there to help!

With such a young baby they don't take chances. There is probably a miniscule chance of something that they want to check for. When they're only tiny it's quick and easy to check, and they'd rather do that than take even the tiniest risk.

And they're not telling people to keep away from A&E if its needed at present. They're specifically saying if you need something checked then get it checked. A & E is fairly quiet at present, and you'll be kept away from anyone with any symptoms of covid.
It's not a red flag, it's almost certainly them being extra careful because they're so small.

Can you post a picture OP?
Is there any discharge from the eye?
