Chillblains

My 10 Yr old dd has what her DF said is a chillblain on her hand. It does look/feel like one. Having never had them before I googled how to treat it, and was alarmed when the first thing that came up was a link to a study showing how chilblains present in children with corona virus. Is this just Internet paranoia, or is it something to register?

I can link the article. Its an academic study. I was alarmed because it was the first thing that came up! If indeed I am being paranoid (and I hope so!), my second question is, how do I treat the chill Blain? It's causing her discomfort.

So as not to dripfeed. Dd is 10, generally good health. Hasn't been mixing during lockdown. Felt ill with stomach cramps earlier today, and complains about the pain from chillblain.. But no cough, sore throat etc.

Thank you.

Chilblains on the hands are a bit unusual. Can you post a pic? How is she today? I would be inclined to get a test just in case, especially with the stomach pains.

One more thing-did she go out in that recent snow? Did the chilblain appear since then? Does it itch?

Bunnybigears · 30/01/2021 10:08

My son has covid toe, looks very similar to chilblains, I was told people can also get it in their fingers. Usually appears as a symptom towards the end of the virus so may test negative even though it was caused by Covid if you see what I mean.

Hi sorry for slow reply I didn't think I'd had any replies! It's hard to photograph because it doesn't look like much, but it's a definite bump on the finger before her thumb, there was some redness aswell but 2 days of chamoille lotion seem to have helped that. Plus keeping it warm with hot water bottles. Would chilblains be enough to get her tested for covid?? We didn't have any snow down here (South). But it has been cold. She has hardly been out, we've been very careful.

Just book a test for tomorrow. Current symptoms reported include upset stomach and the first thing I wondered when I saw chillblains was has the OP considered covid.

I have a funny one on my finger (have covid).

TheBaroucheBox · 31/01/2021 21:28

DS and I had Covid and I had chillbain type spots on my finger in the latter stages of having the virus, so yes I think you should order a test.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 31/01/2021 23:20

OK im quite shocked tbh, but of course i will order a test if people think thats the best thing to do. Will call nhs tomorrow, and get their advice as well. Its gone down now., and it isnt bothering her any more. just to clarify her stomach wasn't upset, she had a pain/cramp. I put it down to "growing pains" due to her age (pre period). But shes been eating fine, and no diahrea or vomitting. No cough, loss of taste or appettite.
Shes been in all week just doing lessons on zoom.

I honestly thought people would tell me i was being silly to mention covid (ive got a hisotry of anxiety/paranoid thoughts). But really i wanted advice on how to prevent, look after chill blains. Feel bad ive ignored it all weekend now. At least she hasnt been out anywhere.

It might not be but bettig a test is going to be such a usual occurance now that at least you'd know.

In theory everyone should be getting them everytime they get a cough
Which I know our school wasn't, but especially with the rates so high Id encouage anyone with an inkling they might be to get tested.

MyNameForToday1980 · 31/01/2021 23:32

I had chilblains (COVID toe) as my only real symptom of COVID.

I felt generally fine, maybe very slightly under the weather with a one-off upset tummy (which I put down to PMS), then rotten chilblains for three weeks.

For clarity, it was not proven that it was COVID at the time (it was pre wide spread testing). But when I showed my Dr (photos of) my toes my she said she strongly believed it was COVID, and I had a positive antibody test a month later.

One thing I liked about it was that COVID toe is generally seen as a late symptom of young, healthy, folk. I am not young.

@FreshFancyFrogglette how did you get on? Have you got a result for your daughter yet?

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 02/02/2021 13:57

My odd finger is peeling now but isn't sore anymore!
