Any experience with progressive shortsightedness?

DD(10) was diagnosed with shortsightedness last year. Her sight has worsened by 20% in just 3 months.
Is it likely to carry on at this pace from now on?
Does anybody have any words of reassurance?
Anything that helped? I feel so gutted for her 😞
Thanks.

Hi, yes, me age 8! I became moderately short sighted very quickly from nowhere and have a -4 prescription. However since age 16 have been stable and now -4.25 age 39!

I also have DD 6 who is severely long sighted and has worn glasses since age 3 so I understand what it is to worry about your child's sight x

Thank you, that's reassuring.
Did you wear any corrective contact lenses?

What's her prescription OP?

I do worry that we're going to end up with a nation of children who are myopic. My children are spending hours on the pc at a time and it's really not good for them.

Your daughter needs to have decent breaks from the PC and plenty of outdoor time (studies show that being outside just 1 hour a day can reduce the progression of myopia).

There are also contact lenses which have been shown to reduce myopia progression - MiSight and ortho-k.

I was about 12 when I was diagnosed. It got regularly worse until I was about 18 then stabilised at -4.25 in each eye. I started wearing contacts at 16 and have been quite happy since then! Still hate when I have to wear my glasses for any reason. I found the first year of adjusting to wearing them the hardest.

She's -1.75 and -2.25. I worry because this came out of nowhere and got worse very quickly.
The optician asked her about contact lenses but she freaked out so for now he's adjusted her glasses. He will ask her about contacts again next time so I need to work with her to get used to the idea.

I agree about the devices though. She's been spending so much time on her ipad (school and lockdown boredom) and I'm addressing it.

Itsnotgolf, my son (16) has extreme myopia as well and is continuing to get worse. He is currently around a -23 right eye and -24 in left eye. He is classed as visually impaired and still wears glasses. He manages quiet well and has usuable vision. It is important your daughter takes regular breaks from screens and lets you know of any changes in her vision.

Really sorry, I have only just seen this. No, I didn't wear corrective contacts. Just glasses from age 8 and from age 15, contact lenses. I hope your DD is doing well.

Covidcorvid · 13/02/2021 23:06

Yes. Dd was 3yo when first tested and had to wear glasses, can’t remember how bad it was then but it’s got worse every year. She’s 19yo now and is -12. 😩

Covidcorvid · 13/02/2021 23:07

Oh I didn’t know about the special contact lenses....the optician has never said. Too late for Dd now I guess.

minipie · 13/02/2021 23:07

I started wearing glasses age 7 and as I recall, my prescription roughly doubled (so from about -4 to -8) during my school years. But then the pace slowed and by my late 20s had stabilised at about -9. I’ve worn contact lenses since the age of 12 and had no issues with them.

IggyAce · 13/02/2021 23:16

I was diagnosed around 10/11 as short sighted and I remember going thru around 4 pairs of glasses (got the same style different colour) in 8-10 months as I got older it has got steadily worst but I’ve been pretty stable since my mid 20’s (currently early 40s).
