Nosebleeds in 5yr old

Queenbee95 · 02/01/2021 11:12

My 5yr old DS has regular nose bleeds (once every 2/3 weeks, sometimes the time between is a lot longer)
Anyway he’s had two in the last day now. A lot of blood and huge clots coming from his nose..
I don’t really know what to do, nose bleeds aren’t something I know much about. Should I wait till Monday to phone GP. Should I call 111 and see what they say?
I’m quite worried, but maybe it’s because I’m pregnant and pretty squeamish right now..
I feel so bad for him

Hi, did you get any answers? My dd 5 in two weeks time just started having nose bleeds. I read on the nhs website it’s very common in children 3-10. I’m going to call my gp in the morning. I feel sick with worry I have terrible anxiety.

My daughter had horrible nosebleeds it was very distressing for her and us. She was prescribed a cream to put up her nose and I think it took a week or two and they stopped.

My son now ten has suffered with recurring nosebleeds since about age 5, it's very common. Mostly what sets it off is changes in the weather eg season changes or the weather going from cold and dry to damp and warm and sometimes just for o reason. He had his nose cauterised a few years back but he only managed one nostril since it was quiet painful I think. But since then that nostril doesn't bleed anymore just the uncauterised one. They have slowed down now he's getting older so do think it's something they eventually grow out of. Speak to your doctor one look up my sons nose and he knew straight away it was to do with blood vessels breaking due to different factors Smile

Ah thank you...I wish they were open now. I can’t sleep.

I managed to talk to the dr today and she put my mind at rest. Asked me questions and because she’s had a few accidents to her nose she believes it’s due to a ruptured blood vessel and gave us some cream which she said may make her nose bleed to start. I wish I wasn’t such an anxious person. I think health anxiety is just the worst.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 24/02/2021 21:07

@LucyCharlotteP that’s what worked for us Smile

Can I asked what the cream is called please? My 5 year old has frequent nose bleeds (which I believe were caused by a bash when he was little) and when I spoke to the dr they just suggested cauterisation but were hesitant to refer him for it and said just wait and see if it got better (it hasn't!)
YesIDoLoveCrisps · 24/02/2021 21:40

@APeakyBlinder If @LucyCharlotteP doesn’t answer I will have a look in the morning for you.

LucyCharlotteP · 24/02/2021 22:02

Of course its called Naseptin nasal cream dr warned it would most probs make her nose bleed but so far so good today 🤞🏻.

LucyCharlotteP · 24/02/2021 22:15

Just wanted to add the cream contains peanut oil. Could that be why your drs haven’t prescribed?

APeakyBlinder · 25/02/2021 07:22

Thank you, no peanut allergies - the GP we saw was quite dismissive but we're currently waiting for his second nose bleed of the week to stop so I really do want to get it sorted if we can!

LucyCharlotteP · 25/02/2021 07:27

Hope you have some luck. Our dr said if that doesn’t work they would refer her to ears, nose and moth at children’s.

MoiraNotRuby · 25/02/2021 07:31

Good luck everyone with bloody children. I know how distressing it is for parents, both mine have had cauterisations and my 16 year old still has spectacular nosebleeds but nothing like as common as they were when he was small. Definitely get the GP involved, it is much nicer getting sorted as a planned event than a dramatic A and E visit, I have experience of both!!!

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2021 07:39

Hi, I hope the cream works for you OP. I suffered from frequent nosebleeds from being 6/7 ish all the way through to teens, and to a lesser extent still now (50). The frequency tailed off in secondary school. Triggers are - altitude, long tunnels, trains, dry air, or ... anything else!!

Bizarrely, the dc have managed to aim various cricket balls and footballs in my face over the years, and never caused a nosebleed.

I’ve been cauterised - I’m not sure that a permanent fix - I was 7 and nosebleeds continued from different blood vessels. I’ve had the cream. I seem to remember it makes really uncomfortable scabs inside your nose. My best method of dealing with nose bleeds is to know what to do and just live with them.
