My dd is 4 weeks old. She's developed a red mark on the side of her nose near her eye. I'm hoping it doesn't get bigger or raised. At the moment it's flat and small ish but noticeable.
My worry is it getting bigger. I had a carnivorous hemangioma as a child. It didn't go away and I had two have two lots of surgery and laser treatment but they didn't do anything until I was 12 and I suffered quite a lot of bullying and distress. This is one of things I feared when pregnant.
Does anyone have any more recent experience of how nhs are dealing with these types of things in children now? I have an appointment with gp next week for her but fully prepared to be fobbed off. Thanks in advance

It’s now quite common for this sort of birthmark to be treated with tiny doses of a beta-blocker, particularly if near the yes and may impact on vision or if bleeds. Works really well. Please mention your concerns to your GP at the 6 week check. Most don’t need treatment but if your dc’s does then this is available.

My daughter had a hemangioma on the top of her head at birth and it got bigger and more swollen until she was turned 1 then it stopped swelling and decreased quite rapidly. At it's biggest it was the size of a £2 coin and very raised. By age 3 it was completely gone.
I don't know what treatments are offered on the NHS but my GP assured me it would disappear. Apparently it's quite common in premature babies which my dd was.

Definitely speak with your GP at her 6 week check up.

@Ikeameatballs that's good to know. It would be great if there was a simple solution should it get bigger

My granddaughter was referred to hospital, at her 6 week check by the GP, for the same thing. The hospital took it very seriously as she has quite a few over her body. The beta block treatment was mentioned. She’s now already got appts for a scan and then a talk with the consultant to discuss treatment.

Don’t worry the NHS will treat if it’s needed.

Here’s a link to the NHS discussing this issue.

I have two daughters who both had strawberry birthmarks. One on her forehead, became very raised and quite large. We didn’t treat as a baby and she is now 8. Whilst it shrunk, it hadn’t gone and we decided to get it removed - had the operation a few weeks ago and is going to be left with a scar. Felt this was better than leaving it as she was getting very bothered by it. Second daughter had one on her eyelid - she was given propranolol at 3 months and it went completely by the time she was about 9 months. It was a bit of a pain as the prescription was always a little tricky to get hold of and she needed 3 doses spread out through the day. But definitely worth it. Push for a referral to dermatology - some GPs are not great on this so you might have to be pushy. There is a Facebook group called Birthmark Support which is very helpful and supportive.

My 18 month old has a strawberry birth mark on her chin. It appeared around 4 weeks or so and it had been noted and queried by health professionals ever since! They've always said it will grow and then start to shrink but have also said to watch out for bleeding, size etc. Like PP have said, it grew until 1 year old and now it is slowly receding but is still just under £1 coin size.

My daughter was born with a strawberry mark on her back. She never had any treatment but now at 10.5 it's barely visible.

DD had one on her back. It started to go when she was about 2, and now you would never know that it had ever been there.

All 3 of mine have them. One on the inside of leg. One on his chest and one on the back of his head. All grew untill they was about 1 then started to fade. The elder 2 has no trace left. Youngest you can see is if he's cold or too hot. His hair covers it mostly now hes 14 months so still time to fade yet.
