Newborn not pooing much

My son is a week old, he was doing a few dark green poos a day which midwife said was all normal, but in the last couple of days since his transitioned to the yellow/brown ‘korma’ poo he’s only going once or twice in 24 hours. He’s eating like a champ, not being sick and passing wind both ends, just feel like he should be doing more dirty nappies. He’s exclusively formula fed. When he does poo there’s nothing wrong with the colour or texture. I’m extra paranoid because he had a meconium plug when he was born and I’m scared of any lasting effects. He was sorted out in neonatal and discharged from hospital and I’m told he is absolutely fine now but they have done a test for cystic fibrosis, and I’m so worried about the results.
Really hope I’m just being paranoid and that this is all fine? Not got another midwife visit til next Wednesday.

Sounds OK to me. Mine didn't poo more than once a day - ever - and there was nothing wrong with him. He grew up fine! I know some babies poo a lot more but it isn't a competition and as long as he is well, don't worry. Your baby is only a week old and if there are problems, you will be told, but nothing sounds abnormal to me.

It’s been 30 hours now since last poo. Feel like I want to ring someone 😕

Mine went about once a week for the first few months, but if it's worrying you it is absolutely fine to call the midwives. Congratulations on your new baby!

Pickles89 · 24/12/2020 09:57

It's fine OP! They can go a week sometimes!!

rumerhasit · 24/12/2020 10:06

Is baby breastfed OP?? They can go up to 10days!!!!

bleachblondemom · 24/12/2020 12:13

He’s formula fed, he’s farting loads just no poo yet still. But he doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable, and his tummy is soft. We’re going to give him a bath later as I heard the warm water can help.
I’m not expecting the midwife to be able to do much, i think I just want reassurance that he’s ok.

My babies were breastfed and only poo nappy about once a week. As long as wet nappies everything good. If you get dry nappies that is a problem. Don't get hung up over this just enjoy your baby.

Rang the midwife and she said it’s not unusual, and is happy with how everything else sounds like his eating, passing gas etc. She gave me some tips to try so I’ll do that this afternoon.
Plenty of wet nappies still, I guess I just imagined babies to poo a lot more than this! Never thought I’d be hoping so much for a dirty nappy lol.

@bleachblondemom lie him flat and gently move his legs up and down to his belly button in a (like you would if you were curling up) and gentle cycling motions. That might get him going...and a warm bath.

bleachblondemom · 24/12/2020 16:25

Literally gave him like one mil of cooled boiled water and he did it 😂 a big one too! I feel a lot better now.

Don't resort to giving him water like that all the time OP. They are really not supposed to have water. If he is not distressed then I don't see why him doing a poo is a problem. It is totally normal for babies to go days between poos.

bleachblondemom · 24/12/2020 17:40

I won’t it was only cos the midwife suggested it. I already told her I was apprehensive about doing that without a professional saying it was ok. Like I said he only had a teeny bit, I think he would’ve gone anyway it was just a coincidence
