Should I be worried my 5 month old isn’t rolling?

Hi everyone,

My little girl turned 5 months old a couple of a days ago and is yet to roll over. She has rolled over maybe 5 times from her stomach to her back but hasn’t yet made any real attempt to go from to back to stomach. She sometimes will grab her feet and roll to her side but shows no interest in fully turning to her stomach. Is that normal? When on her stomach she can push up to lift her chest off the floor but doesn’t seem to be a massive fan of doing so and will sometimes just flail her arms around. We got a letter through ready for her 6 month review saying it can be a red flag if a child isn’t rolling. I don’t know what it could be a red flag for but it’s worrying me.Sad

Just for reference she can sit up completely independently now, and is hitting other milestones (she’s laughing, babbling, grabbing toys with both hands, putting her own dummy in etc). She’s always smiling at familiar people and is also unsure of new/ less familiar people.

Any advice would be great Smile

There’s a difference between “not quite rolling” and “lays flat making little attempt to move”. You have nothing to worry about. My first born didn’t roll until she was six months.

I wouldn’t worry, she sounds like she is growing and getting control of her muscles. My now-3-year-old never really rolled or crawled, she was a bum shuffler and only walked at 18mo.

Both my two rolled by accident once and never again. They also hated pushing themselves up on their arms, holding their heads up and all the rest of it.

They were such anti-rollers!

They crawled at 10 months and walked at 14 months - both of them almost exactly the same dates, funnily enough.

I wouldnt worry.

They were both very impatient of anything other than walking, but were such gangly tall little creatures it took them ages to master walking - their centre of gravity was so high and their legs and arms so relatively long (like little chimps).

10 months - 14 months was a cross time for them as they were very frustrated.

She sounds fine.

Try putting g her on mat or rug with everything out of reach
She might be motivated to roll to get things

She's fine 😊

My 18 month old still doesn't really roll! 😆 She does everything else she's "supposed" to, including walking, so I'm not worried.
My oldest rolled once around 5 months then never bothered again until he was around 8 months.
Don't worry!

My first rolled non stop from 18 weeks. My second made not the slightest attempt until she was 7 months. Did it once at 8 months and never bothered again! She’s over one now and you and walking etc.

I wouldn’t worry at all.

My 19m old son never rolled. Ever. Not once. But he was a pretty early walker at just turned 10m. As a pp said, I think the "red flag" element is more aimed at babies who lay flat on the back / tummy and make no attempt to move themselves.

Interestingly I have a v.good friend who's 18m old son only started bum shuffling last week and has never pulled himself up to standing, and has never stood on his feet even up at the furniture. If they try and stand him on his feet he lifts his legs up. His muscle tone has been tested and there are no issues, their consultant isn't concerned as he has interest in moving and exploring, just doesn't want to use his legs yet. It's good to be aware but honestly, rolling isn't overly important as long as baby has an interest in moving I think
