Dental abscess when do they get better?

Hi my daughter is 5 and has an abscess, we went to the dentist yesterday who prescribed antibiotics and told us to pop the abscess as it was ready to go but we can't, as she's in extreme pain.

Her face is still swelling now she's had two days worth of antibiotics now and we are still alternating between calpol and neurofen. I'm wondering if I should call 111 for more advice?

She is just red hot the temperature won't come down at all, has stomach and head pain barely eaten or has drunk anything and is quite sleepy. I don't know if this is normal or not.
does this sound normal?
We've also been doing salt water rinses, I just assumed now she's had 6 doses of antibiotics she'd feel better now.

Call 111 immediately, temperature, swelling and pain are a dental emergency.
She needs to be seen again

I can't get through to the dentist at all we was literally in there for seconds and they've referred us on to kings to get the tooth treated whenever that comes through the post. I'll ring 111 see what they can do, I mean she has stages where she perks up but It's horrible seeing her like this, plus I worry about sepsis too.

I think you need to take her to A&E. Shes got a temperature despite paracetemol, is sleepy with a facial swelling. Shes clearly not well and she needs to be seen urgently, and she needs the abscess drained.

If the dentist thought the abscess was ready they should have drained it.

I just spoke to 111 they said to wait for a clinician to call us back. She's up again now doing a colouring this is what concerns me she's ok for a bit then it's like she goes downhill again and is sleepy and crying out in pain yet she's had the medicines.

A collection of pus does not have blood supply, antibiotics alone often do not work. You need to get the pus and the source of infection out

Hope shes okay OP Flowers

How do I do it without hurting her? They said to just press it but she's not having none of itSad

OP, I am the most relaxed parent going, but I would be up A&E in a heartbeat

Piccalino3 · 11/12/2020 20:40

If she's got a swollen face despite antobiotics she needs to go to A&E. A fat face could compromise her airway and is a dental emergency. Please take her there tonight as it sounds like she needs more help.

CorianderQueen · 11/12/2020 20:44

I find it odd he told you to drain it instead of doing it himself

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoonon · 11/12/2020 20:54

You dont do it. Thats why you need to take her to a&e.

She has a significant infection that is making her unwell. She hasnt eaten or drunk much and shes 5 years old and in pain. Irrelevent to what 111 say taking her to a&e would absolutely not be innappropriate

Omg, I’ve had one of these and it was agony! I can’t believe he left your 5 year old like this! Take her to a and e and if they can’t do anything, book her an emergency dentist appointment for tomorrow (not with him) and don’t leave until they’ve at least upped her antibiotics or maybe drain it. If they drain it, the pain goes away instantly.

Hi sorry didn't update last night so we went to A&E that was a waste of time didn't do anything just said it'll burst when it's ready swelling and fever is normal.
Today it's gone down the swelling but looks like the abscess is still there I tried to pop it last night and it started to bleed not sure if that's good or not? But over all she doesn't seem to be in to much pain, eating and drinking again but it is still there.
