DD vomiting on holiday

DD is 3. We are away from home in an ok but not very comfy Airbnb apartment. Overnight she's starting vomiting and has a fever. I've spoken to 111 and the pharmacy and they say rest and calpol. I'm not sure whether to bundle her up and take her home (3 hr journey) so she can be in her own bed and I can cook food. Does anyone have any advice?

How long are you meant to be staying for? With a fever she should get a covid test. I'd probably head home to do that.

Stay and rest. You don’t want to be travelling with a sick child, I couldn’t think of much worse when I’ll, a bed is better than no bed, even if it’s not your own.

I have had similar with my son becoming ill on holiday, away from home. The services are pretty similar wherever you are. I would check out the location of the local walk in centre and A&E and the opening times of the pharmacies. In my experience the first 48 hours of childhood viruses are usually the worst. Once she is more stable I would decide whether to stay or leave. However, I would not personally undertake a 3 hour journey with a vomiting child. Best of luck Flowers

Without knowing why you are away from home and how long you were planning to be staying away from home, it's hard for anyone to advise.

As no one is 'holidaying' at the moment, I assume you have an important reason to be staying in the airbnb. Only you can decide which is more important, your daughter being ill or your need to stay where you are.

Also how would you get home. With a fever she really shouldn't be using public transport. If you're driving then that would be fine.

Inastatus · 05/12/2020 10:36

@xyzandabc - why do you need to know the reason the OP is away? As long as you aren’t in tier 3 you are allowed to have a UK holiday to a place in the same tier.

OP - I’d stay where you are for now. You don’t want to take a vomiting child on a car journey. I hope she’s better soon.

Thanks all. It's not Covid I'm pretty sure. But I also take the point that bed is v important right now and travelling will be a strain so we will stay put.

@Inastatus I don't need to know. However OP asked for advice on whether she should go home or stay put.

I think knowing why and how long OP was there for would make a difference to the advice given by many posters.

If OP were on a weeks holiday and due to go home tomorrow people would probably reply differently than if OP were there because they were staying near an elderly relative to provide care following surgery.

Or if they were there for a funeral, or to be near a dying relative, or for work, I don't know, lots of reasons that would make a difference as to the importance of staying vs child having their own bed and a familiar kitchen.

Genericnewnumusername · 05/12/2020 11:13

@xyzandabc actually people are ‘holidaying’ at the moment. Perfectly legally.

Inastatus · 05/12/2020 11:17

@xyzandabc - ok well her post title did say ‘DD vomiting on holiday’ Your reply just sounded like you were judging her for just simply being on holiday and not away for an important reason.

xyzandabc · 05/12/2020 11:18

Apologies OP and others I've just seen the actual title mentions holiday. Sorry, I only read the post rather than the title.

If you are due to be staying a few more days and there's a chance DD will be better before you go home then I'd stay. But if you're due to leave tomorrow or Monday, I'd call it a day and just get home as you're not going to have any holiday left after DD is better. Better being stuck indoors in your own house than an uncomfy apartment.

Lots of people have been sure they don't have covid but they do. She has one of the 3 main symptoms therefore requires a test. Once that's booked you need to stay where you are so take that in to account. It could come back positive or the test results could be delayed. (To add stomach bug symptoms are actually common in dc with covid ) are you able to isolate there if necessary?

Children can carry Covid like a sickness bug. She probably hasn't got it however she has a fever so should have test. If she is positive but feels better tomorrow you could pass it on if you take her out.

I would possible not take her home. The long travel could upset her tummy more, you may have to keep stopping when she is sick, being on motorway you may not be close to Drs or Hospitals in the unlikely but plausible chance of needing one.
If you get a Covid test, and she feels better with a negative result you will be able to enjoy the rest of your time away.

Seeline · 05/12/2020 11:23

If it is a vomitting bug, I would be concerned about catching it myself. If there are two adults and your car I would head home straight away. One can stay in the back to look after her, and then at least you should be home before either if you start throwing up.

However, I am surprised that you seem so sure it can't be covid. If she has a high temp, I think I would still test to be sure.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 05/12/2020 11:26

I would also definitely be getting a test for Covid and warning the owners of the AirBNB about her being ill.
