Squint surgery

My 1 year old son is having squint surgery next week on both eyes. Can anyone tell me what to expect after the surgery? I feel so anxious about it and just want an idea about how much pain he’ll be in, what his eyes will look like, whether I should give him calpol, will his sleep be disturbed etc. Any help would be really appreciated :)

I’m an orthoptist so happy to answer any questions. His eyes are likely to be red afterwards and will feel prickly and a bit sore for a few days you will often be given steroid eye drops to use to help reduce inflammation and sometimes antibiotic drops , this will depend where you are being seen and we recommend using calpol if children need some pain relief. The redness should improve quickly but the eyes may be a bit sticky. The important think is the redness should be getting better each day , if the redness is getting worse or discharge is getting worse get in contact with the hospital. As much as possible try and stop him rubbing his eyes. Usually children bounce back very quickly from squint surgery

Oh thank you so much. Should calpol ease any pain that he’s in for the first few days then? I hate to think of him hurting that’s all

Calpol will definitely help but the eyes will feel a bit prickly as well so he might be a bit irritable as well. If you are given drops for afterwards sometimes children will struggle against having them put in so you can try doing it when he is asleep
